The Line: Connecticut Huskies +10.5 -- Over/Under:
The Syracuse Orange and the UCONN Huskies meet in opening round action of the 2K Empire Classic from Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
The Syracuse Orange will look for a victory to add to their current 2-0 start following an 88-70 win over Morehead State in their last outing. Tyus Battle led the Orange with 23 points on 7 of 15 shooting while Elijah Hughes added 21 points on 7 of 15 shooting as well with 8 rebounds. Oshae Brissett added 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the double-double while Paschal Chukwu added a double-double of his own with 14 points, 10 rebounds and a whopping 6 blocks as well in the victory. Brissett leads the Orange by averaging a double-double per game with 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while Buddy Boeheim leads Syracuse with 2.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Syracuse is averaging 75 points per game on 40% shooting from the field, 18.2% from behind the 3-point line and 69% from the foul line this season.
The UCONN Huskies will look to maintain their own perfect start to the year after improving to 2-0 with a 94-66 win over UMFC in their last outing. Tarin Smith led the Huskies with 22 points on 10 of 12 shooting while Jalen Adams added 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting with 4 threes. Tyler Polley and Alterique Gilbert added 12 points each to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for UCONN in the win. Christian Vital added a game-high 10 rebounds as well in the winning effort for the Huskies. Adams leads the Huskies in scoring with an average of 18 points per game while Vital leads UCONN with 9 rebounds per game and Gilbert leads UCONN in the assists department with 4 assists per game this season. As a team, UCONN is averaging 87 points per game on 51.2% shooting from the field, 39.6% from behind the 3-point line and 65.7% from the foul line this season.
Syracuse is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a win while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 non-conference games. UCONN is 2-9 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall while the under is 11-5 in their last 16 games against the ACC. The underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
While this is almost a home game for the Orange, it’s no wonder the underdog has had success in this matchup with lines like these. The last six meetings have been decided by single digits and 4 of the last 6 meetings have been decided by 3 points or less. I think these two teams match up pretty well, and this just feels like a case of too many points, so I’ll take them with UCONN here.
