The Charleston Southern Buccaneers take the floor with the Davidson Wildcats in Friday college basketball.
The Charleston Southern Buccaneers face a huge challenge in their season opener versus the Davidson Wildcats. Charleston Southern will need improved numbers at both ends of the floor to avoid another 12-19 season that was third from last in the Big South. The Buccaneers couldn’t be overlooked offensively at 74.3 points on 44.1% accuracy but the defensive end of the floor was not a factor too often with 75.6 points given up on 36.1% shooting.
Assuming the CSU defense doesn’t step up significantly, points will be needed and the good news is the return of Christian Keeling who enjoyed a monster freshman campaign at 17 points and seven rebounds. Losing Armel Potter to transfer really hurts the Buccaneers which puts more pressure on Cortez Mitchell (11.1 ppg) and Javis Howard who brings back 7.8 points and 5.8 boards.
The Davidson Wildcats look for a return to the NCAA tournament and it starts with a matchup with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Davidson was just 8-10 in the Atlantic 10 an 17-15 overall and were generally average in most areas. Davidson outscored the opposition 73.8-71.6 which landed the team somewhere near the middle of the conference rankings.
Davidson can use some improvement everywhere which makes the loss of guard Jack Gibbs very difficult with his team high 22 points, four assists and four rebounds disappearing that will be hard to replace. Fortunately the Wildcats get back 6-8 forward Peyton Aldridge who averaged 20.5 points and eight rebounds. 6-11 forward Will Magarity should improve upon his eight points and five boards while newcomer guard Kellan Grady can play multiple positions and help ease the scoring load.
Under is 6-2 in Charleston Southern last 8 road games. Under is 7-1 in Davidson last 8 home games and over is 6-2 in Davidson last 8 overall and under is 6-2 in Davidson last 8 Friday games.
Opening day has many teams scheduling for easy wins which Davidson is doing here. Davidson should be a better squad despite losing Jack Gibbs and I thought this spread would be +20 points. The Buccaneers have scoring ability which might be enough for a cover but I'll back the known quantity...
