The Butler Bulldogs and the DePaul Blue Demons meet in Big East conference college basketball action from the Wintrust Arena on Wednesday night.

The Butler Bulldogs will look to rebound after back-to-back losses following a 70-69 loss to Xavier in their last outing. Kamar Baldwin led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 6 of 12 shooting with a team-high 7 assists while Paul Jorgensen added 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting with 4 threes and Jordan Tucker added 12 points with a team-high 8 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Butler in the losing effort. Aaron Thompson added 4 points to match his 4 assists while Joey Brunk added 7 points and 6 rebounds. Baldwin leads the Bulldogs with an average of 17 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while Thompson leads Butler in assists with 4.3 assists per game this season. As a team, Butler is averaging 73.2 points per game on 45.3% shooting from the field, 36.4% from 3-point range and 74.5% from the foul line this season.

The DePaul Blue Demons will look to build on a pair of consecutive wins following a 79-71 road win over St. John’s in their last outing. Femi Olujobi led the Blue Demons with 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting with 8 rebounds while Paul Reed came 2nd with 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting with 10 rebounds for the double-double. Eli Cain and Max Strus each had 14 points to round out the scoring in double figures for DePaul in the win, with Cain adding a pair of threes and 3 steals while Strus hit a pair of triples of his own while adding a team-high 12 rebounds for his own double-double. Devin Gage dished out a team-high 4 assists as well in the victory. Strus leads DePaul with an average of 18.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game while Cain leads DePaul in assists with 4 helpers per game this season. As a team, DePaul is averaging 76.9 points per game on 47.4% shooting from the field, 31.7% from 3-point range and 69.3% from the foul line this season.

Butler is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 conference games while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 conference games. DePaul is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 conference games and 9-22-3 ATS in their last 34 games following a win while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall. The under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams and 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at DePaul.

I was actually surprised to see Butler as the favorite in this game, but it kind of makes sense considering that the Bulldogs are probably due for a bounce-back performance after back-to-back heartbreaking 1-point losses to Seton Hall and Butler. However, it’s hard for me to jump on board with Butler after blowing a 17-point lead, including a 10-point lead with less than 4 minutes to go against Xavier, especially when getting points with a DePaul team that’s playing really solid basketball right now. The Blue Demons have been in up to the end in both of their conference losses this season and own a win over the aforementioned Seton Hall and an impressive road win over St. John’s last time out. I think the points hold a lot of value here, so I’ll take the free bucket with DePaul in a game I see the Blue Demons winning outright.

Pick:
DePaul +3
