The DePaul Blue Demons and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers meet in a CBI tournament semifinal matchup from the McGrath-Phillips Arena on Thursday night.
The DePaul Blue Demons come into the semifinals after picking up a 97-89 win over Longwood in their last outing. Max Strus led the Blue Demons with 38 points on 15 of 21 shooting with 4 threes while Paul Reed added 23 points with 12 rebounds, 3 steals and a pair of blocks for the double-double. Jaylen Butz shot a perfect 5 of 5 from the floor for 10 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for DePaul in the winning effort. Strus leads DePaul in scoring with 19.9 points per game while Reed leads the Blue Demons in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game and Devin Gage leads DePaul in assists with 4 assists per game this season. As a team, DePaul is averaging 78.2 points per game on 47.3% shooting from the field, 35% from behind the arc and 72.1% from the foul line this season.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers punched their ticket to the semifinals after a 109-91 win over West Virginia in their quarterfinal matchup. DeVante Jones led the Chanticleers with 32 points on 10 of 15 shooting with 6 threes, a 6 of 6 mark from the foul line and 7 rebounds to go along with a team-high 7 assists. Tommy Burton came 2nd with 16 points and 6 boards while Zac Cuthbertson added 15 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Ebrima Dibba chipped in 14 points with 6 assists while Ajay Sanders and Tyrell Gumbs-Frazier each contributed 11 points with 3 threes to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Coastal in the winning effort. Cuthbertson leads Coastal Carolina with an average of 18.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game this season. As a team, Coastal Carolina is averaging 77.4 points per game on 45.2% shooting from the field, 37% from behind the arc and 71.8% from the foul line this season.
DePaul is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 11-27-3 ATS in their last 41 games following a win while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 home games. Coastal Carolina is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 11-5 in their last 16 games following a win.
I can understand DePaul being favored here as the Blue Demons are the more recognizable team of the two coming from a power conference. However, the Blue Demons haven’t been that great ATS down the stretch and in the tournament, and are still allowing 87.5 points per game in their two tournament games so far. Coastal Carolina looked good in the first round and just hung 109 points on another power conference team in West Virginia. This has the makings of being a shootout, and I think in a game that could come down to the wire in the high-80s, I’ll want the points in my pocket to be safe.
