NCAA BB | Xavier Musketeers (8-5) at DePaul Blue Demons (8-3)
Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

The Xavier Musketeers will travel to Wintrust Arena to take on the DePaul Blue Demons this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.

The Xavier Musketeers improved to 8-5 on the season after defeating the Detroit Mercy Titans, 69-55, on December 28th. Xavier was outstanding on the defensive end against the Titans and pulled away after an 11-0 Musketeers run gave Xavier a 63-46 lead with 4:28 left in regulation. Xavier shot 44.0% from the field while holding Detroit Mercy to just 32.4% shooting from the field and 22.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Musketeers was Quentin Goodin who had 22 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, and 3 steals.

On the season, Xavier is averaging 75.5 ppg on 48.7% shooting from the field. The Musketeers are averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game on 33.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Xavier has been led by Quentin Goodin (14.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.7 spg), Naji Marshall (12.5 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.1 spg), Paul Scruggs (11.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.6 spg), and Tyrique Jones (10.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.0 spg).

Defensively, Xavier is allowing their opponents to average 70.5 ppg on 42.6% shooting from the field. The Musketeers have a rebound margin of 4.1 and a turnover margin of -1.4.

The DePaul Blue Demons had their 3-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-3 on the season after being defeated by the Boston College Eagles, 65-62, this past Saturday. DePaul led for the majority of the game in this one, however, couldn’t hold on for the victory late after Boston College closed out the final 2:07 regulation on a 10-2 run. DePaul shot 36.6% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Blue Demons was Max Strus who had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal.

On the season, DePaul is averaging 78.7 ppg on 47.2% shooting from the field. The Blue Demons are averaging 7.1 three-pointers per game on 31.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, DePaul has been led by Max Strus (19.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.0 spg), Eli Cain (14.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.7 apg, 1.4 spg), Femi Olujobi (10.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Devin Gage (10.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.6 spg).

Defensively, DePaul is allowing their opponents to average 69.1 ppg on 41.4% shooting from the field. The Blue Demons have a rebound margin of 7.8 and a turnover margin of 1.0.

The Musketeers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Blue Demons are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Big East opponents and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss.

Xavier has lost 2 of their last 4 games and after blowout losses agianst Missouri & Cincinnati on the road, I can’t say I was too impressed by the Musketeers offensive performance agianst Detroit Mercy who had one of the worst scoring defenses in the country. DePaul suffered a tough loss at home agianst Boston College before the holidays, however, the is a solid Blue Demons team that ranks T-83rd in scoring offense, 87th in FG%, and 97th in defensive FG%. DePaul has a great duo in Max Strus & Eli Cain and as I expect the Musketeers to continue to struggle on the road, I’m taking DePaul  to cover this small road spread.

Pick:
DePaul Blue Demons -1.5
