The Illinois State Redbirds will travel to The Knapp Center to take on the Drake Bulldogs this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.

The Illinois State Redbirds improved to 12-9 (5-3 MVC) on the season after defeating the Indiana State Sycamores, 76-62, this past Sunday. Illinois State led by a 37-31 margin at halftime and had no trouble securing the home victory after a 6-0 Redbirds run gave Illinois State a 60-44 lead with 7:31 left in regulation. Illinois State shot 50.0% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 15-9 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Redbirds was Phil Fayne who had 26 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.

On the season, Illinois State is averaging 71.9 ppg on 43.7% shooting from the field. The Redbirds are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game on 34.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Illinois State has been led by Milik Yarbrough (17.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 3.6 apg), Phil Fayne (15.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.0 spg, 1.4 bpg), Zach Copeland (10.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.6 apg), and Josh Jefferson (9.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.8 apg).

Defensively, Illinois State is allowing their opponents to average 72.6 ppg on 44.1% shooting from the field. The Redbirds have a rebound margin of -1.3 and a turnover margin of 0.5.

The Drake Bulldogs won their 4ths straight game and improved to 16-5 (5-3 MVC) on the season after defeating the Valparaiso Crusaders, 70-59, this past Saturday. Drake was outstanding on the defensive end against the Crusaders and pulled away late after a 7-0 Bulldogs run gave Drake a 67-55 lead with 1:36 left in regulation. Drake shot 47.1% from the field while holding the Crusaders to just 37.9% shooting from the field & 12.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was D.J. Wilkins who had 20 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal.

On the season, Drake is averaging 78.0 ppg on 47.9% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 9.2 three-pointers per game on 36.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Drake has been led by Nick McGlynn (16.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.3 bpg), Nick Norton (14.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 5.9 apg, 1.2 spg), D.J. Wilkins (11.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.0 spg), and Brady Ellingson (10.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.6 apg).

Defensively, Drake is allowing their opponents to average 70.4 ppg on 42.4% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of 2.0 and a turnover margin of -0.6.

The Redbirds are 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games vs. MVC opponents and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Bulldogs are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs MVC opponents and 14-2-1 ATS in their 1ast 17 games following an ATS win.

Illinois State has won 3 of their last 4 games however, hasn’t been that strong statistically on either end of the court as they come into this game ranked just 218th in scoring offense, 214th in scoring defense, and T-248th in rebound margin. Drake has won 5 of their last 6 games and has been led by their offense that ranks 71st in scoring offense, 43rd in FG%, and 75th in 3P-FG%.

Drake is one of the better MVC teams this season and has been outstanding at home this season, posting a 9-1 record. Illinois State is a decent team, however, the Redbirds are just 1-6 on the road this season and as I think their defense is going to struggle against the Bulldogs, I’m taking Drake to cover this mid-range home spread.

Pick:
Drake Bulldogs -6.5
