The Valparaiso Crusaders and the Drake Bulldogs meet in MVC college basketball action from the Knapp Center on Wednesday night.
The Valparaiso Crusaders will try to break free of a tie-up in the bottom half of the MVC standings, sitting at 7-7 in conference play after a 65-62 win over Illinois State last time out. Javon Freeman-Liberty leads Valparaiso in scoring and rebounding with 19.4 PPG and 5.9 RPG while Daniel Sackey leads the Crusaders in assists with 3.7 APG. As a team, Valparaiso is averaging 71.5 points on 43.4% shooting from the field, 32% from behind the arc and 71.2% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 70.5 points on 46% shooting from the field and 35.8% from 3-point range. Valparaiso is 4-8 straight up and 5-6-1 against the spread on the road this season.
The Drake Bulldogs will look to pull out of the same logjam after picking up an 85-80 win over Evansville to improve to 7-7 in MVC play. Liam Robbins leads the Bulldogs in scoring and rebounding with 13.7 PPG and 6.4 RPG while Roman Penn is 2nd in scoring and tops in assists with 11.7 PPG and 5.8 APG this season. As a team, Drake is averaging 70.7 points on 46.5% shooting from the field, 34.5% from 3-point range and 71.1% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 68.1 points on 42.3% shooting from the field and 37.3% from 3-point range this season. Drake is 13-1 straight up and 7-5 against the spread at home this season.
The points with Valparaiso on the road are worth a look, but a win over Illinois State doesn’t move the needle much for me. Drake has had issues of their own, but the Bulldogs’ recent success has come at home, and I just think that a 4-point win is doable for Drake given their form at home this season, so I’ll lay the points with the Bulldogs in this one.
