The Memphis Tigers and the East Carolina Pirates meet in AAC college basketball action from the Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on Wednesday night.
The Memphis Tigers will look to build some steam after a 78-71 win over UConn in their last outing. Kyvon Davenport led the Tigers with 26 points on 9 of 13 shooting with a pair of threes and a 6 of 7 mark from the foul line. Jeremiah Martin and Tyler Harris each had 12 points with Martin dishing out a team-high 6 assists along with a pair of steals while Harris shot 5 of 9 with a pair of threes. Raynere Thornton added 11 points with a team-high 8 rebounds to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Memphis in the win. Martin leads the Tigers with an average of 16.5 points and 4.4 assists per game while Davenport leads Memphis in rebounding with 7.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Memphis is averaging 81.8 points per game on 45.5% shooting from the field, 32.8% from behind the 3-point line and 70.9% from the foul line this season.
The East Carolina Pirates will be out to snap a 3-game losing skid after a 72-68 overtime loss to USF in their last outing. Isaac Fleming led the Pirates with 14 points while Shawn Williams had 4 threes and a team-high 3 assists as part of his 13-point outing. Jayden Gardner and K.J. Davis each had 11 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers for ECU in the loss with Davis adding a pair of steals and a team-high 5 rebounds. Seth LeDay added 7 points with 3 steals as well in the loss. Gardner leads East Carolina with an average of 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while Fleming leads the Pirates in assists with 3.4 assists per game this season. As a team, East Carolina is averaging 66.7 points per game on 41.8% shooting from the field, 26.9% from behind the 3-point line and 66.7% from the foul line this season.
Memphis is 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games following a win. East Carolina is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games. Memphis is 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.
East Carolina on the road is a hard proposition to stomach as the Pirates either get blown out or basically find some creative way to lose like they did against USF. The Pirates had the game in hand for most of the way but just couldn’t hold on. With that said, I’m not comfortable laying points with Memphis, especially on the road where the Tigers have lost their last 3 games away from FedExForum and the Pirates have already shown some ability to hang with the Tigers, losing by just 6 points on the road earlier this season. Neither of these teams have been covering, which is all we really care about in this line of work, so if forced to pick, I’m going to go with the trends and they tell me to take the points with East Carolina given the history between these two teams.
