FIU Golden Panthers +3.5 -- Over/Under: 148.5
The North Texas Mean Green & FIU Golden Panthers will face off at the Ford Center At The Star this Tuesday night in the 1st round of the C-USA Men’s Championship.
The North Texas Mean Green finished their regular season with an overall record of 20-11, and earned the 10-seed for the C-USA Men’s Championship after finishing conference play with an 8-10 record. North Texas benefited from a weak non-conference schedule and started C-USA play off well as they started the season with an impressive 17-1 record, however, the Mean Green struggled down the stretch and come into postseason play on a 7-game losing streak. North Texas was led by their defense this season which comes into this game ranked 15th in scoring defense & 39th in defensive FG%, however, the Mean Green have had trouble generating points this season as they rank just 242nd in scoring offense and are averaging just 58.9 ppg during their 7-game losing streak.
On the season, North Texas is averaging 70.3 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Mean Green are averaging 8.6 three-pointers per game on 34.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, North Texas has been led by Umoja Gibson (12.5 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.4 spg), Ryan Woolridge (11.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 4.8 apg, 2.0 spg), Roosevelt Smart (11.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.2 apg), and Michael Miller (10.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.5 apg).
Defensively, North Texas is averaging 63.0 ppg on 40.9% shooting from the field. The Mean Green have a rebound margin of 4.2 and a turnover margin of 0.6.
The FIU Golden Panthers finished their season with an overall record of 19-12 and earned the 7-seed in the C-USA Conference Tournament after finishing conference play with a 10-8 record. FIU started the season with an impressive 7-1 record and although they struggled a bit at the beginning of conference play, the Golden Panthers have some solid momentum coming into the C-USA Championship as they’ve won 5 of their last 6 games. FIU plays at a fast pace which has their offense ranked 11th in scoring offense, and although their defense has given up a bunch of points this season, the Golden Panthers do rank 1st in steals per game and turnover margin.
On the season, FIU is averaging 83.4 ppg on 44.3% shooting from the field. The Golden Panthers are averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game on 30.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, FIU has been led by Brian Beard Jr. (17.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 6.1 apg, 3.0 spg), Devon Andrews (15.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.6 spg), Trejon Jacob (10.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.1 spg), and Antonio Daye Jr. (9.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.6 spg).
Defensively, FIU is allowing their opponents to average 80.1 ppg on 45.5% shooting from the field. The Golden Panthers have a rebound margin of -6.5 and a turnover margin of 5.7.
The Mean Green are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Wednesday games, however, are just 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The Golden Panthers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and just 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
FIU defeated North Texas in both of their regular season games this season as the Golden Panthers won by a 69-59 margin in mid-February while winning by a73-58 margin just last Saturday.
North Texas has some solid depth and play great defense, however, this is a team that just can’t score the basketball and had a losing record on the road this season. FIU has been playing some of their best basketball of the season as of late and between the fact that the Golden Panthers were able to put up plenty of points against the Mean Green defense in the regular season and that I just don’t see the North Texas offense being able to keep up with the Golden Panthers, I think FIU wins this one outright. Take FIU on the money line! Good Luck!
