The Southern Miss Golden Eagles and the FIU Panthers meet in C-USA college basketball action from the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Thursday night.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look to build some steam after a 101-51 rout of Marshall in their last outing. LaDavius Draine led the Golden Eagles with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting with 4 threes in just 18 minutes while Kevin Holland added 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 4 threes. Leonard Harper-Baker and Cortez Edwards each had 15 points as part of a double-double with Harper-Baker grabbing 14 rebounds while Edwards dished out 10 assists with 4 steals. Tim Rowe added 11 points in 11 minutes to round out the scoring in double figures for USM in the win, while Tyree Griffin fell one point shy of his own double-double with 9 points and a team-high 15 assists in the victory. Edwards leads Southern Miss in scoring with 13.3 points per game while Harper-Baker leads the Golden Eagles in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game and Griffin leads USM in assists with 7 helpers per game this season. As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 71.9 points per game on 45.3% shooting from the field, 37.1% from behind the 3-point line and 62% from the foul line this season.
The FIU Panthers will be looking to string together some sort of consistent play after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 14 games after an 89-72 loss to FAU in their last outing. Devon Andrews led the Panthers with 21 points on 7 of 14 shooting with 3 threes in addition to 7 rebounds while Brian Beard Jr. had 16 points with 3 threes and a pair of steals and Isaiah Banks added 10 points to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for FIU in the loss. Osasumwen Osaghae added 9 points with team-highs of 13 rebounds and 3 blocks while Antonio Daye Jr. had 6 points while dishing out a team-high 4 assists and 3 steals in the losing effort. Beard Jr. leads FIU with an average of 18.7 points and 6.2 assists per game while Osaghae leads the Panthers in rebounding with 8.5 boards per game this season. As a team, FIU is averaging the 5th-most points per game in the country, putting up 87 points per game on 45.1% shooting from the field, 30.6% from behind the 3-point line and 63.1% from the foul line this season.
Southern Miss is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 conference games while the under is 8-3-1 in their last 12 games overall. FIU is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games while the over is 8-3-1 in their last 12 games following a loss. The over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I can understand why the line is a pick ‘em, as FIU is the better team at home, but the Panthers have had major issues with consistency lately. With that said, I try to see if I can pick off a team that’s in better form or has a history in this matchup, and while they don’t have the wins and losses to back it up, Southern Miss has been playing much better defense as of late, holding their last 4 opponents to 63 points or less. I’ll take a shot with Southern Miss in this pick ‘em scenario based on how well their defense has played as of late and the fact that defense tends to travel in these kinds of games.
