Florida Gulf Coast Eagles -2.5 -- O/U:
The NJIT Highlanders and the Florida Gulf Coast meet in A-SUN conference tournament quarterfinal action from the Allco Arena on Monday night.
The NJIT Highlanders enter the conference tournament with the #5-seed after finishing the regular season with a 20-11 overall record, including an 8-8 mark in A-Sun conference play. The non-conference of NJIT’s schedule was highlighted with road wins over Duquesne and Fordham as well as a home win over Brown and a respectable loss to Houston. Zach Cooks led the Highlanders in scoring and assists with 17 points and 2.2 assists per game while Abdul Lewis was 2nd in scoring with 13 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game. Diandre Wilson added 11.3 points per game as the 3rd double-digit scorer for NJIT this season. The Highlanders will look to turn things around in the conference tournament after losing 6 of their last 8 games to finish the regular season. As a team, NJIT is averaging 70.1 points per game on 44.4% shooting from the field, 33.7% from behind the arc and 71.3% from the foul line this season.
The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles enter the tournament as the #4-seed after finishing with a 14-17 overall record and a 9-7 mark in A-Sun conference play, but lost out on the #3-seed after losing a tiebreaker to North Florida. The Eagles gave themselves quite the tough non-conference portion of their schedule, with a win over South Dakota State and losses to Michigan State, Toledo, Colorado State, Mississippi and Florida just to name a few. Schadrac Casimir led the Eagles in scoring with 14.4 points per game and in assists with 2.3 helpers per game while Haanif Cheatham was FGCU’s only other double-digit scorer with 13.2 points per game this season and RaySean Scott Jr. led the Eagles in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds per game this season. The Eagles enter the tournament hot after finishing the year with 3 straight wins and victories in 6 of their last 8 games. As a team, Florida Gulf Coast is averaging 71 points per game on 45.2% shooting from the field, 36.8% from behind the arc and 67% from the foul line this season.
NJIT is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 road games and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games against a team with a winning home record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a loss. Florida Gulf Coast is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games.
NJIT may have the better record, but I’m not surprised to see FGCU favored here as the home team won both meetings between the two this season. With that said, NJIT has been solid on the road and I think the Highlanders have just a touch more scoring depth than the Eagles do, so I’ll take a shot with the free bucket and NJIT here.
