The UMass Minutemen and the Georgia Bulldogs meet in college basketball action from the Stegeman Coliseum on Sunday evening.
The UMass Minutemen will look to find some consistency after splitting their last 10 games and alternating wins and losses in each of their last 6 following an 85-84 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in their last outing. Luwane Pipkins and Jonathan Laurent tied for the team-high with 20 points, with Pipkins shooting 8 of 17 with 5 rebounds and a team-high 7 assists while Laurent shot an efficient 6 of 8 from the floor with 4 threes, a team-high 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Rashaan Holloway added 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting in just 13 minutes while Carl Pierre added 13 points with 3 threes and Keon Clergeot added 11 points with 4 assists to round out the group of double-digit scorers for the Minutemen in the winning effort. Pipkins leads the Minutemen with an average of 19.8 points and 6.2 assists per game while Holloway leads UMass on the glass with 6.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, UMass is averaging 79.8 points per game on 47.8% shooting from the field, 37.8% from behind the arc and 67.7% from the foul line this season.
The Georgia Bulldogs will be looking to build on back-to-back wins after a 70-59 win over Georgia Tech in their last outing. Nicolas Claxton led the Bulldogs with 13 points along with team-highs of 13 rebounds, 6 assists and a whopping 6 blocks for a monstrous double-double while TeShaun Hightower added 12 points with 3 steals. Rayshaun Hammonds added 11 points and 7 rebounds while Tyree Crump chipped in 10 points to finish off the foursome of double-digit scorers for Georgia in the winning effort. Hammonds still leads the Bulldogs in scoring with an average of 14.7 points per game while Claxton leads Georgia on the glass by averaging a double-double per game with 12.6 points to go along with his team-high averages of 10.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Georgia is averaging 78.1 points per game on 47.3% shooting from the field, 34.1% from behind the arc and 72.2% from the foul line this season.
UMass is 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games against the SEC and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games against a team with a winning home record while the over is 10-2 in their last 12 road games. Georgia is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games against the A-10.
UMass can score the basketball, scoring 78 or more in 6 of their last 8 games. However, the Minutemen have also played a lot of close games lately, with their last 4 games being decided by a combined 8 points. Those kinds of games on a consistent basis can really wear a team down, especially on the road. The Minutemen have pulled off back-to-back covers away from home against Temple and Providence, but Georgia is a strong team at home, and their 5 wins at home have all been by double figures while the one loss was a 2-point loss to a very good Arizona State bunch. I think this is another game that the Bulldogs can use to flex some muscle at home, so I’ll lay the points with Georgia here.
