The Line: Gonzaga Bulldogs -11 -- Over/Under: 145
We have some West Coast conference college basketball action on Saturday night, as the BYU Cougars take on the #14 Gonzaga Bulldogs.
The BYU Cougars will try to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games, including a 76-69 loss to Loyola Marymount in their last outing. Elijah Bryant led the Cougars with 24 points on 8 of 14 shooting with 3 threes and a team-high 5 assists with 3 blocks, while Yoeli Childs added 15 points with 13 rebounds for the double-double as the only other Cougar to score in double digits in the loss for BYU. Bryant leads BYU in scoring with 18.5 points per game while Childs leads the way in rebounding with 8.7 rebounds per game and Tj Haws leads the Cougars in assists with 4.1 assists per game this season. As a team, BYU is scoring 75.2 points per game on 49.2% shooting from the field, 37.8% from behind the arc and 74.4% from the foul line this season.
The #14 Gonzaga Bulldogs will look to add to their current 4 game winning streak following a 69-59 win over San Diego in their last outing. Johnathan Williams led the ‘Zags with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double, while Josh Perkins and Zach Norvell each added 13 points with 4 rebounds apiece. Silas Nelson added 12 points to round out the quartet of double digit scorers for the Bulldogs in the winning effort over the Toreros. Williams leads the ‘Zags with an average of 13.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while Perkins is Gonzaga’s top assist man with 5.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Gonzaga is scoring the 5th-most points per game in the country with 87.4 per game while owning the 9th-best field goal percentage in the nation at 50.8% from the field this season. Gonzaga is also shooting 36.8% from behind the arc and 72.4% from the foul line this season.
BYU is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 16-7-1 ATS in their last 24 games following a loss while the under is 13-3-1 in their last 17 road games. Gonzaga is 0-6 aTS in their last 6 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the over is 9-3 in their last 12 home games. BYU is 4-9-2 ATS in the last 15 meetings between these two teams.
BYU’s loss to Loyola Marymount was shocking and the Cougars just looked awful. However, I said in Gonzaga’s last game that the Bulldogs are on auto-fade ATS until further notice, and that’s not going to change here. The Zags keep letting teams hang around, and granted San Diego is the best in the country at shutting down the 3-pointer, the Toreros aren’t a top-tier team in the WCC. BYU has a level of expectations that they hold themselves to, and the game against LMU didn’t cut it and you have to imagine that the Cougars will come out with some fire against a rival like Gonzaga. I’m not saying BYU wins outright, but the Cougars have more than enough talent to keep this one within single digits so I’ll take BYU and the points here.
