The Line: Gonzaga Bulldogs -27.5 -- Over/Under: 153
The Idaho State Bengals and Gonzaga Bulldogs meet Tuesday in college basketball action at the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Idaho State Bengals are coming off back-to-back losing seasons under coach Bill Evans, but they improved their win total from five to 14 victories, so there is reason for optimism heading into the new year. Idaho State returns its top-two players in Brandon Boyd and Jared Stutzman, a duo that combined for 29.8 points and 3.9 assists. The Bengals also have a third double-digit scorer in Balint Mocsan and a really good outside shooter in Gary Chivichyan, who could thrive in his fourth year with expanded minutes. The Idaho State Bengals are an experienced basketball team with a lot of key players returning, so this could be the first winning season for the program since the 2015-16 season. The Idaho State Bengals have split their last six road games.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are still looking for that national title under coach Mark Few, and once again, many believe this could finally be the season. While Gonzaga does say goodbye to its top player in Johnathan Williams, the Bulldogs are still loaded with talent and experience. Killian Tillie will likely be the go-to guy now after averaging 12.9 points and 5.9 rebounds, while Zach Norvell Jr., Josh Perkins and Rui Hachimura are three other double-digit scorers from a year ago back for some unfinished business. Geno Crandall comes over from North Dakota after three years of consistent playmaking and Filip Petrusev is a four-star recruit who adds a serious post presence. The Gonzaga Bulldogs are well coached and loaded across the board. Gonzaga is once again playing for March in hopes of finally bringing that championship to Spokane. The Gonzaga Bulldogs have lost three home games since February of 2016.
The Bengals are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. West Coast and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Tuesday games. The Bulldogs are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 Tuesday games and 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games overall. The under is 16-5 in Bengals last 21 non-conference games and the under is 7-3 in Bulldogs last 10 home games.
The Idaho State Bengals are going to have a solid season by their standards, but they're in way over their head here against a title contender in the Gonzaga Bulldogs. While laying massive lines this early in the season isn't ideal, Gonzaga is one of those teams that just keeps the ball rolling and doesn't skip a beat often. The Zags are used to beating up on subpar teams year after year. I'll eat the chalk in what should be an opening beatdown.
