The Pepperdine Waves and the Gonzaga Bulldogs meet in WCC college basketball action from the McCarthey Athletic Center on Thursday night.
The Pepperdine Waves will look to rebound after back-to-back losses and defeats in 4 of their last 5 games following a 72-65 loss to Saint Mary’s in their last outing. Colbey Ross led the Waves with 22 points on 6 of 13 shooting with 3 threes and a team-high 5 assists. Jade’ Smith came 2nd with 13 points along with 4 steals while Kessler Edwards added 12 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Darnell Dunn added 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting with 3 threes to round out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Pepperdine in the losing effort. Ross leads Pepperdine with an average of 18.8 points and 7.3 assists per game while Smith leads the Waves in rebounding with 6.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Pepperdine is averaging 76.2 points per game on 44.4% shooting from the field, 37.6% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line this season.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs will look to build on their current 16-game winning streak after a 79-67 win over San Diego last time out. Rui Hachimura led the ‘Zags with 22 points on 10 of 15 shooting with 10 rebounds while Zach Norvell Jr. chipped in 18 points and Josh Perkins added 15 points and a team-high 9 assists. Brandon Clarke contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Gonzaga in the win. Hachimura leads Gonzaga in scoring with 20.3 points per game while Clarke leads the Bulldogs in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game and Perkins leads the ‘Zags with 6.8 assists per game this season. As a team, Gonzaga is averaging 90.2 points per game on 52.8% shooting from the field, the best scoring offense and best field goal percentage in the country this season, along with a 37% mark from behind the arc and 76.7% from the foul line this season.
Pepperdine is 21-10 ATS in their last 31 games overall and 14-5 ATS in their last 19 conference games while the under is 8-3 in their last 11 road games. Gonzaga is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games overall while the under is 13-4 in their last 17 games following a win. Pepperdine is 9-27-3 ATS in the last 39 meetings between these two teams and 4-14-1 ATS in the last 19 meetings between these two teams at Gonzaga.
These lines are always tough as Gonzaga has the ability to blow a team out whenever the ‘Zags see fit, but Gonzaga sometimes has a tendency to take their foot off of the gas and allow a team to slip in the backdoor and cover. As far as this matchup goes, Gonzaga hasn’t lost to Pepperdine in 17 years and a lot of those games haven’t been close. I just don’t see Pepperdine doing enough to keep pace with the Bulldogs here so while I’d personally leave this game alone, if you have to play it I’d probably lay the points with Gonzaga in this one.
