We have some non-conference college basketball action on Friday night, as the Howard Bison take on the Hawaii Warriors.
The Howard Bison will look for another feel good win to improve on their poor 3-12 start to the year after getting the win over UNC-Wilmington in their last outing by a final score of 80-75. RJ Cole led the team with 42 points on 13 of 22 shooting with 5 threes and a team-high 4 assists and 4 steals. Charles Williams came 2nd with 30 points 11 of 19 shooting, including a perfect 4 of 4 from behind the arc as Cole and Williams accounted for 90% of Howard’s scoring in the win. Zion Cousins added a team-high 7 rebounds in the winning effort as well for the Bison. Cole leads the team with an average of 21.6 points and 6 assists per game, while Cousins leads the team in rebounding with 7.9 boards per game this season. As a team, Howard is scoring 68.2 points per game on 39.4% shooting from the field, 33.8% from behind the arc and 72.9% from the foul line this season.
The Hawaii Warriors will try to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games, including a 77-63 loss to Princeton in their last outing. Michael Thomas led the team with 22 points on 10 of 14 shooting with 7 rebounds, while Brocke Stepteau was the only other Warrior to finish in double figures scoring in the loss. Jack Purchase added 7 rebounds of his own, while Drew Buggs dished out a team-high 4 assists. Thomas leads Hawaii with an average of 11.3 points and 6 rebounds per game, while Buggs is the team’s leading assist man with 2.9 assists per game this season. As a team, Hawaii is scoring 71.6 points per game on 44.2% shooting from the field, 28.2% from behind the arc and 66% from the foul line this season.
Howard is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games following a win. Hawaii is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games while the over is 7-3 in their last 10 games following a loss.
I know the trip to Hawaii is difficult for any team to make the long trek to Hawaii, but two of Hawaii’s 3 opponents in the Diamond Head Classic travelled to the Island and got a win over the Warriors. Granted, I think Princeton and Miami are better than Howard, however the Warriors failed to cover their only game as a double-digit favourite this season and have only won two games against D-I opponents by double digits this season. The Bison may need another Herculean effort from Cole and Williams here, but I think the Bison can keep this one within single digits so I’ll take the points here.
