Houston Cougars -12.5
The Georgia State Panthers and the Houston Cougars will match up on the college basketball court in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Friday.
Houston strolls into this game at 31-3 on the year overall. The Cougars won their first two AAC Tournament games versus UConn and Memphis, but stalled out against Cincinnati on Sunday with a 69-57 loss.
In the loss to the Bearcats, Houston’s Armoni Brooks topped the team with 17 points and five rebounds. The only other Cougars player in double-figures there was Corey Davis with 12 points, one rebound and one assist.
Over on the Georgia State side, they’re 24-9 this year. The Panthers rolled through their two Sun Belt Tournament matches, slaying Texas State 59-46 Saturday and TX-Arlington 73-64 on Sunday.
In the win over the Mavericks, Georgia State’s top scorer was Malik Benlevi, who doubled up on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Damon Wilson added 13 points for the Panthers there, and Kane Williams had 12 with five assists.
The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last four after an ATS win and 4-0 ATS in their last four after a straight-up win. Georgia State is 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral-site games.
Meanwhile, the Cougars are 6-0 ATS in their last six versus the Sun Belt and 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 after an ATS loss. Houston is 6-2 ATS in their last eight non-conference games and 7-3 ATS in the last 10 neutral-site games.
Houston’s got to be down in the dumps right now, as they had a pretty bad game against a Cincinnati team they drilled a few games back 85-69. The Cougars haven’t looked like themselves at a few points late in this season, and it’s troubling to look at some of the results (like the 69-64 loss to UCF on March 2).
In any case, I really think Georgia State can cause the Cougars a few issues if they come in with that offense cooking. With a pretty thick line here, I have to go with the Panthers to eke through a cover.
