The Marist Red Foxes and the Iona Gaels meet in college basketball MAAC-tion from the Hynes Athletics Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Marist Red Foxes will try to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 6 games following a 67-53 loss to Fairfield to fall to 5-8 in conference play, just above last place in the MAAC standings. Michael Cubbage leads the Red Foxes with an average of 10.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3 assists per game. As a team, Marist is averaging 60.4 points on 38.3% shooting from the field, 33.8% from behind the arc and 64% from the foul line while allowing opposing teams to average 65.6 points on 41.3% shooting from the field and 34% from behind the arc. Marist is 3-9 straight up and 7-5 against the spread on the road this season.
The Iona Gaels will try to escape a logjam near the bottom of the MAAC after an 80-57 win over Manhattan extended their winning streak to three and improved the Gaels to 6-7 in conference play. E.J. Crawford leads Iona in scoring with 17.8 points per game while Tajuan Agee is 2nd in scoring and tops in rebounding with 13.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Isaiah Washington is averaging 10.6 points and a team-high 3.3 assists per game while Isaiah Ross and Asante Gist are also adding double-digit scoring averages this season. As a team, Iona is averaging 69.3 points on 43.2% shooting from the field, 33.1% from behind the arc and 74.9% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 71.7 points on 43.3% shooting from the field and 37.9% from 3-point range. Iona is 3-5 straight up and 2-5-1 against the spread at home this season.
Head to head, the home team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I’m tempted by Marist and the points give how the Red Foxes have performed on the road this season against the number, but the problem is that Iona looked good against Manhattan and while Iona has been the proverbial box of chocolates, where you really don’t know what you’re going to get on any given night, the fact is that the Gaels have a lot more scoring depth than Marist does. This is a lot of points, but something about this just feels like a double-digit Iona win, so I’ll lay the points with the Gaels here.
