Rider Broncs -1 -- Over/Under: 172.5
The Rider Broncs and the Iona Gaels meet in college basketball MAAC-tion from the Hynes Athletic Center on Friday night.
The Rider Broncs come into this game looking to build on their current 5-game winning streak, sitting atop the MAAC standings following a 60-47 win over Manhattan in their last outing. Dimencio Vaughn led the Broncs with 16 points on 5 of 10 shooting with 4 threes and a team-high 9 rebounds while Anthony Durham added 13 points on an efficient 6 of 7 shooting from the floor along with 5 boards. Frederick Scott added 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting with a pair of threes, 5 rebounds and 3 assists to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Rider in the win. Tyere Marshall added 9 points and 6 rebounds while Stevie Jordan contributed 7 points with a pair of steals and a team-high 5 assists as well in the winning effort. Scott leads Rider in scoring with 12.3 points per game while Marshall leads the Broncs in rebounding with 6.2 rebounds per game and Jordan leads Rider in assists with 4.4 assists per game this season. As a team, Rider is averaging 77.6 points per game on 46.3% shooting from the field, 36.2% from behind the 3-point line and 60.9% from the foul line this season.
The Iona Gaels will look to find some consistency after splitting their last 8 games following an 83-81 loss to Monmouth in their last outing. Asante Gist led the Gaels with 21 points on 6 of 13 shooting with 3 threes and 4 assists. Tajuan Agee came right behind with 20 points along with 10 rebounds and 3 assists for the double-double while Rickey McGill added 18 points and team-highs of 5 assists and 3 steals. Ben Perez added 13 points on 4 of 6 shooting from 3-point range to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Iona in the losing effort. E.J. Crawford was held to just 7 points but still leads Iona with an average of 16.6 points per game while Agee leads Iona in rebounding with 7.3 rebounds per game and McGill leads the Gaels in assists with 5.3 assists per game this season. As a team, Iona is averaging 80.9 points per game on 46.3% shooting from the field, 36.1% from behind the 3-point line and 74.3% from the foul line this season.
Rider is 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games overall and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 20-8 in their last 28 road games. Iona is 4-14 ATS in their last 18 games overall and 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 8-1 in their last 9 games overall. Rider is 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams at Iona.
Neither of these two teams have been all that good ATS as of late, so it’s hard to really feel confident about backing either team here. However, while Iona has had the upper hand at home in recent years in this matchup, the fact is that with this line being so close to a pick ‘em, the best bet is to just go with the team in better form and right now that’s Rider. The Broncs have won 5 in a row heading into this one and I think they make it 6 with another victory here.
