Iona Gaels -2 -- Over/Under: 142
The Siena Saints and Iona Gaels will face off at the Times Union Center in the semifinals of the MAAC Men’s Championship this Sunday night.
The 5-seed Siena Saints improved to 17-15 (11-7 MAAC) on the season and kept their season alive after defeating the 4-seed Rider Broncs, 87-81, in the Quarterfinals of the MAAC Men’s Championship on Saturday. Siena has one of their best offensive performances of the season and pulled away late after a 11-1 Saints run gave Siena a 75-66 lead with 1:38 left in regulation. Siena shot 65.1% from the field and 57.1% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Saints was Evan Fisher who had 22 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist.
Coming into their game against the Broncs, Siena was averaging 76.9 ppg on 46.1% shooting from the field. The Saints were averaging 7.9 three-pointers per game on 34.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Siena has been led by Evan Fisher (15.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.6 apg), Jalen Pickett (15.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 6.7 apg, 2.1 spg), Kevin Degnan (8.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.2 spg), and Manny Camper (6.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.2 apg).
Defensively, Siena was holding their opponents to an average of 65.3 ppg on 46.1% shooting from the field. The Saints had a rebound margin of -3.8 and a turnover margin of 1.6.
The top-seeded Iona Gaels had all they could handle from the 8-seed Saint Peter’s Peacocks, however, the Gaels were able to advance after a 73-71 victory on Friday night. Iona struggled defensively agianst the Peacocks, however, was able to hold on late for the victory after taking a 70-62 lead with 2:23 left in regulation. Iona allowed Saint Peter’s to shoot 56.5% from the field, however, did win the turnover battle by a 17-5 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Gaels was Tajuan Agee who had 26 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block, and 2 steals.
On the season, Iona is averaging 76.8 ppg on 45.2% shooting from the field. The Gaels are averaging 8.7 three-pointers per game on 34.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Iona has been led by E.J. Crawford (18.1 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.8 apg), Rickey McGill (15.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 5.1 apg, 2.3 spg), Tajuan Agee (13.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.0 spg), and Asante Gist (11.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.2 apg).
Defensively, Iona is allowing their opponents to average 76.8 ppg on 44.7% shooting from the field. The Gaels have a rebound margin of -2.5 and a turnover margin of 0.9.
The Saints are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall, however, are just 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games following a straight up win. The Gaels are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall, however, are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
Siena and Iona split their regular season series as Siena defeated Iona on the road by a 56-54 margin in early February while the Gaels won their road game by a 57-52 margin in mid-February.
Iona might have earned the 1-seed in the MAAC, however, this Gaels team isn’t as dangerous as we’ve seen in the past and has to be concerned that their defense allowed the Peacocks 341st ranked scoring offense to put up 71 points. Siena was one of the better teams down the stretch in MAAC play and between the fact that they’ve won 8 of their last 11 games and that they have a defense that can slow the Gaels offense, I’m taking Siena to upset Iona in this one. Take Siena to win!
