Iowa State Cyclones -13.5 -- Over/Under: 148
The West Virginia Mountaineers and the Iowa State Cyclones meet in Big 12 conference college basketball action from James H. Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday night.
The West Virginia Mountaineers will look to rebound after back-to-back losses and defeats in 7 of their last 8 games following an 83-66 loss to Tennessee in their matchup in the SEC/Big 12 challenge. Esa Ahmad led the Mountaineers with 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting with a team-high 7 rebounds and a pair of blocks while Derek Culver added 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting with 6 rebounds as the only other West Virginia player to score in double figures in the loss. Jordan McCabe added 6 points and a team-high 4 assists as well in the defeat for WVU. Ahmad leads West Virginia with an average of 12.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while James Bolden leads the Mountaineers in assists with 2.5 assists per game this season. As a team, West Virginia is averaging 74.1 points per game on 42.2% shooting from the field, 32.2% from behind the arc and 68.2% from the foul line this season.
The Iowa State Cyclones will look to build on an 87-73 road win over Ole Miss in their SEC/Big 12 challenge matchup last time out. Talen Horton-Tucker led the way with 23 points on 11 of 18 shooting with 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Lindell Wigginton added 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting with 3 threes and Marial Shayok added 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 3 threes to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Iowa State in the win. Tyrese Haliburton added 5 points and a team-high 9 assists while Nick Weiler-Babb flirted with a triple-double, putting up 8 points, 8 assists and a team-high 9 rebounds. Shayok leads the Cyclones in scoring with 19.6 points per game while Haliburton leads Iowa State in assists with 4.3 assists per game and Michael Jacobson leads the Cyclones in rebounding with 6.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Iowa State is averaging 79 points per game on 48.4% shooting from the field, 36.7% from behind the arc and 71.8% from the foul line this season.
West Virginia is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games. Iowa State is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-0-2 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 home games. The over is 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
This seems like a lot of points to lay considering that West Virginia rarely gets this kind of underdog tag in years’ past. However, I think that goes to speak to just how poor of a season the Mountaineers are going through. West Virginia started out with some tough luck, but their last 3 losses have each come by double-digits and between these two teams, a lot of results over the years haven’t been that close with 5 of the last 6 meetings being decided by double-digits. Iowa State dominated Ole Miss on the road, and I think that the Cyclones can carry that over here against West Virginia, so I’ll lay the points with Iowa State in this spot.
