The Line: Jackson State Tigers -1.5 -- Over/Under:
Down at Williams Assembly Center on Monday, the Southern Jaguars and the Jackson State Tigers will be matching up on the college basketball circuit.
Southern comes into this game with a 9-14 record on the season. The Jaguars had won four games in a row, but then lost to Grambling on Saturday. In that game, Southern’s Jared Sam put up 23 points to lead the team.
Sam is also the top scorer on the year for Southern with 15.7 PPG and a team-high 8.5 RPG. The only other Jaguars player in double-digits is Sidney Umude (11.5 PPG; 12 games), but Eddie Reese is close on 9.4 PPG.
Over on the Jackson State side, they’re sitting at 10-13 this year. The Tigers had lost three straight, but bounced back with a win over Alcorn in Saturday’s game. In that one, Jackson State guard Jeremiah Jefferson managed 17 points.
Leading the way in scoring average for Jackson State is Maurice Rivers (12.6 PPG; 5.2 RPG), who is followed by Paris Collins (10.8 PPG: 5.6 RPG; 17 games), Chace Franklin (10.3 PPG; 10 games) and Jefferson (10.0 PPG), all averaging in double-digit points.
The Jaguars are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games following a straight-up loss and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall. Southern is also 0-5 ATS in their last five road games and the under is 6-1 in the last seven Monday games.
Meanwhile, the Tigers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 versus the Southwestern Athletic and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall. Jackson State is also 2-7 ATS in their last nine Monday games and the under is 4-0 in their last four overall.
Southern had a nice win streak going there, but they weren’t really lighting up the scoreboard. The Jaguars haven’t put up more than 68 points in any of their last four games, but they’ve been good defensively with a max of 69 allowed in that time. That said, Jackson State hasn’t been too noteworthy on offense either, with no more than 67 points in any of their last four games. This seems like a game to play the under if you can, but otherwise I think Jackson State has the edge here at home.
