We have some Ohio Valley conference college basketball action on Saturday night when the Tennessee State Tigers take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.
The Tennessee State Tigers will look to add to their current 5 game winning streak after taking down Belmont in their lat outing by a final score of 64-56. Christian Mekowulu led the Tigers with 18 points along with 11 rebounds and 3 blocks for the double-double, while Delano Spencer came 2nd with 14 points and Kamar McKnight added 13 points in 22 minutes. Armani Chaney added 12 points with a team-high 3 assists to round out the quartet of double digit scores for Tennessee State in the win. Spencer leads Tennessee State in scoring with 14.7 points per game while Chaney leads the Tigers in assists with 3.6 assists per game and Mekowulu leads the Tigers on the glass with 8.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Tennessee State is scoring 66.5 points per game on 42.5% shooting from the field, 33.6% from behind the arc and 73.8% from the foul line this season.
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks will look to keep their momentum going after an 82-65 win over Tennessee Tech in their last outing. Jason Burnell led the Gamecocks with 22 points along with 12 rebounds and 4 blocks for the double-double while Marlon Hunter added 17 points and Jamall Gregory added 12 points with 4 assists and a pair of steals to round out the trio of double digit scorers for Jacksonville State in the win. Malcolm Drumwright added 4 points with 8 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists, but still leads Jacksonville State with an average of 13.3 points and 3.5 assists per game while Christian Cunningham leads the Gamecocks with an average of 7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Jacksonville State is scoring 73.7 points per game on 46.6% shooting from the field, 34.4% from behind the arc and 70.6% from the foul line this season.
Tennessee State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 conference matchups. Jacksonville State is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning record and 17-8 ATS in their last 25 games overall while the under is 23-8 in their last 31 conference matchups. Tennessee State is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams and 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings at Jacksonville State.
I still think that Jacksonville State is my favorite to win the OVC this season, but the fact of the matter is that Tennessee State is coming into this one in much better form and are fresh off of that solid win against a very good Belmont team. Not to mention that Tennessee State has had the bulk of the success when they play the Gamecocks, as well as in the Gamecocks’ backyard, so I’ll take the points with the Tigers in this one.
