The Elon Phoenix and the James Madison Dukes meet in CAA college basketball action from the JMU Convocation Center on Thursday night.
The Elon Phoenix will look to rebound after losing 5 of their last 6 games following an 84-74 loss to Charleston in their last outing. Tyler Seibring led the Phoenix with 24 points on 8 of 17 shooting with 4 threes and a team-high 6 rebounds. Sheldon Eberhardt added 13 points while Kris Wooten and Andy Pack each had 11 points with Wooten shooting 4 of 6 with 3 threes and 3 assists while Pack chipped in a pair of threes. Nathan Priddy added 10 points with 3 assists to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Elon in the loss. Federico Poser dished out a team-high 6 assists as well in the losing effort. Seibring leads Elon in scoring with 16.5 points per game while Eberhardt leads the Phoenix in assists with 3.4 assists per game and Steven Santa Ana leads Elon in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Elon is averaging 69.7 points per game on 43% shooting from the field, 34.5% from behind the arc and 69.2% from the foul line this season.
The James Madison Dukes will look to build on a 104-99 overtime win over Hofstra last time out. Matt Lewis led the Dukes with 40 points on 11 of 22 shooting with 6 threes and a 12 of 12 mark from the foul line along with 7 rebounds and a team-high 7 assists. Stuckey Mosley added 20 points on 9 of 20 shooting with 6 rebounds while Dwight Wilson chipped in 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting with 8 rebounds. Darius Banks added 12 points with a team-high 4 assists while Deshon Parker chipped in 10 points to finish off the scoring in double figures for James Madison in the win. Mosley leads James Madison in scoring with 17.4 points per game while Wilson leads the Dukes in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per game and Lewis leads the Dukes in assists with 3 helpers per game this season. As a team, James Madison is averaging 70.9 points per game on 44.3% shooting from the field, 36% from behind the arc and 72.8% from the foul line this season.
Elon is 11-23 ATS in their last 34 games overall and 5-15 ATS in their last 20 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 conference games. James Madison is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games against a team with a losing record and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games following a win while the over is 9-3 in their last 12 home games. The underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
The underdog has enjoyed a lot of success in this matchup, so the points with Elon are worth a look. However, James Madison has been playing the better basketball as of late, and a win over arguably the best team in the CAA in Hofstra just goes to speak to that. The Dukes have a tendency to play down to lower opposition, but I think James Madison builds off of the win over Hofstra with a double-digit win and cover here.
