The BYU Cougars will travel to Gersten Pavilion to take on the Loyola Marymount Lions this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.

The BYU Cougars won their 4th straight game and improved to 17-10 (9-3 WCC) on the season after defeating the San Diego Toreros, 88-82 in OT, this past Thursday. BYU was able to fight back from a 39-30 halftime deficit to force OT and was able to pull away from the Toreros after a pair for FT’s by TJ Haws gave BYU an 86-82 lead with just :26 seconds left in OT. BYU shot 48.4% from the field and 52.4% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Cougars was TJ Haws who had 35 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals.

On the season, BYU is averaging 80.5 ppg on 47.3% shooting from the field. The Cougars are averaging 7.2 three-pointers per game on 33.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, BYU has been led by Yoeli Childs (21.2 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.0 bpg), TJ Haws (17.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.2 spg), Jahshire Hardnett (9.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.7 apg0, and Zac Seljaas (7.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg).

Defensively, BYU is allowing their opponents to average 75.6 ppg on 43.7% shooting from the field. The Cougars have a rebound margin of -1.2 and a turnover margin of 2.4.

The Loyola Marymount Lions dropped to 17-9 (5-7 WCC) on the season after being defeated by the 3rd ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, 73-60, this past Thursday. Loyola Marymount held a 54-53 lead with just 8:52 left in regulation, however, struggled defensively down the stretch and allowed Gonzaga to pull away after a 9-0 Bulldogs run gave Gonzaga a 69-58 lead with just 2:38 left in the game. Loyola Marymount shot just 37.9% from the field and 7.1% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Lions was Dameane Douglas who had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.

On the season, Loyola Marymount is averaging 67.6 ppg on 45.2% shooting from the field. The Lions are averaging 5.0 three-pointers per game on 31.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Loyola Marymount has been led by James Batemon (16.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.7 spg), Mattias Markusson (10.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.0 apg), Dameane Douglass (8.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.4 apg), and Eli Scott (8.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.2 apg).

Defensively, Loyola Marymount is holding their opponents to an average of 62.2 ppg on 41.9% shooting from the field. The Lions have a rebound margin of 4.2 and a turnover margin of 1.5.

The Cougars are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 road games and just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS win. The Lions are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a double-digit loss at home and 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a straight up loss.

BYU has won 5 of their last 6 games and currently rank 34th in scoring offense, 47th in FG%, and 278th in scoring defense.

Loyola Marymount has split their last 6 games and currently rank 303rd in scoring offense, 13th in scoring defense, and 83rd in scoring defense.

Loyola Marymount gave Gonzaga one of their toughest games in WCC play this season and has shown that they can be a very tough team to play at home as they come into this game with a 12-2 home record. BYU was able to easily defeat Loyola Marymount at home this season, however, as we saw last year, that didn’t mean much as after winning by 15 points at home, BYU lost by double-digits when they traveled to Gersten Pavilion. Loyola Marymount should have some better success on the offensive end at home agianst the Cougars and as I think their defense will give BYU some trouble, I’m taking Loyola Marymount and the point here. Good Luck!
