The Saint Mary’s Gaels and the Loyola Marymount Lions meet in WCC conference college basketball action from the Albert Gersten Pavilion on Saturday night.
The Saint Mary’s Gaels come into this game looking to build on an 88-66 win over BYU in their last outing. Jordan Ford led the Gaels with 23 points on 10 of 17 shooting with a pair of threes and a team-high 4 assists. Malik Fitts came 2nd with 18 points on 6 of 14 shooting with 3 threes, a team-high 9 rebounds and 4 steals while Tanner Krebs chipped in 14 points on 6 of 11 shooting with a pair of threes and 7 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Gaels in the winning effort. Ford leads the Gaels in scoring with 22.8 points per game while Fitts leads Saint Mary’s in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game and Tommy Kuhse leads the Gaels in assists with 3.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Saint Mary’s is scoring 77.6 points per game on 49.1% shooting from the field, 39.3% from behind the 3-point line and 74.1% from the foul line this season.
The Loyola Marymount Lions will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 5 games following a 76-64 win over Portland in their last outing. Joe Quintana led the Lions with 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting with 3 threes and a team-high 4 assists with 3 steals while Mattias Markusson added 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double. Eli Scott added 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting while James Batemon added 14 points with 4 assists of his own and 4 steals to finish off the group of double-digit scorers for the Lions in the winning effort. Batemon leads the Lions with an average of 18.4 points and 3.9 assists per game while Markusson leads Loyola Marymount in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Loyola Marymount is scoring 71.1 points per game on 44.9% shooting from the field, 31.3% from behind the 3-point line and 76.3% from the foul line this season.
Saint Mary’s is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the under is 36-17-2 in their last 55 conference games. Loyola Marymount is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record and 13-6 ATS in their last 19 games overall while the over is 4-0-1 in their last 5 home games. Saint Mary’s is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams and 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams at Loyola Marymount.
Points with the Lions at home are tempting considering how well Loyola Marymount has played this season and how the Gaels have had their issues on the road. However, even though a lot of the success came with a different Saint Mary’s team taking the floor, the fact is that the Gaels have owned this matchup both overall and on the road for the last few years. I also feel that the Gaels have started to turn a corner, and a 22-point win over rival BYU could be a sign of that. I’ll lay the points with Saint Mary’s here as I’m a bit worried about the inconsistency from Loyola Marymount right now.
