UL-Monroe Warhawks -8 -- O/U: 159.5
The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the UL-Monroe Warhawks meet in Sun Belt college basketball action from the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Thursday night.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will look to rebound after back-to-back losses and defeats in 4 of their last 5 games after a 92-69 loss to Georgia Southern in their last outing. Justin Forrest led the Mountaineers with 15 points while Ronshad Shabazz added 12 points as the only other Mountaineer to score in double figures in the losing effort. Adrian Delph chipped in 8 points with a team-high 3 steals while Isaac Johnson had 8 points and 12 rebounds as well in the loss. Shabazz led the Mountaineers with 17.7 points and 2.4 assists per game while Johnson leads Appalachian State in rebounding with 8.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Appalachian State is averaging 80.3 points per game on 45.6% shooting from the field, 35.8% from behind the 3-point line and 71.5% from the foul line this season.
The UL-Monroe Warhawks will look to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games following a 91-86 double overtime loss to UT-Arlington in their last outing. Daishon Smith led the Warhawks with 34 points on 10 of 26 shooting with 6 threes and an 8 of 10 mark from the foul line along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Michael Ertel added 22 points on 7 of 15 shooting with 4 threes and a team-high 5 assists and a pair of steals. JD Williams and Travis Munnings each had 12 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers for ULM in the losing effort. Munnings added 12 rebounds and 4 assists for the double-double while Williams had 4 assists of his own. Smith leads UL-Monroe with an average of 22 points and 4 assists per game while Munnings leads the Warhawks on the glass with 7.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, UL-Monroe is averaging 77.9 points per game on 44.6% shooting from the field, 38.7% from behind the arc and 78.9% from the foul line this season, which ranks as the 3rd-best free throw percentage in the country this season.
Appalachian State is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 Thursday games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. UL-Monroe is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a loss. The underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
The points are tempting with the Mountaineers as the underdog has had a lot of recent success between the two teams and Appalachian State already owns a win over UL-Monroe this season. However, the Warhawks have been a tough out at home and have been a solid team ATS over the last few weeks. I just have more faith in a bounce back from UL-Monroe than I do Appalachian State, so I’ll lay the points with the Warhawks here.
