Loyola-Chicago Ramblers -9.5 -- Over/Under: 128.5
The Illinois State Redbirds will travel to the Joseph J. Gentile Center to take on the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Illinois State Redbirds won their 2nd straight game and improved to 9-7 (2-1 MVC) on the season after defeating the Northern Iowa Panthers, 70-69, this past Tuesday night. Illinois State allowed Northern Iowa to fight back late after holding a 67-58 lead with just 3:27 remaining, however, the Redbirds were able to hang on for the victory after a pair of Milik Yarbrough FT’s gave Illinois State a 69-65 lead with just :12 seconds left in regulation. Illinois State shot 51.9% from the field and committed just 11 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Redbirds was Milik Yarbrough who had 23 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block.
On the season, Illinois State is averaging 72.8 ppg on 43.6% shooting from the field. The Redbirds are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game on 33.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Illinois State has been led by Milik Yarbrough (16.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 3.9 apg), Phil Fayne (15.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.0 spg, 1.4 bpg), Zach Copeland (10.8 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.5 apg), and Josh Jefferson (9.9 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.0 apg).
Defensively, Illinois State is allowing their opponents to average 73.9 ppg on 43.4% shooting from the field. The Redbirds have a rebound margin of -2.1 and a turnover margin of 0.6.
The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 9-7 (2-1 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Evansville Purple Aces, 67-48, this past Tuesday. Loyola-Chicago couldn’t get anything going on the road against the Evansville defense and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 47-27 margin midway through the 2nd half. Loyola-Chicago shot just 37.3% from the field & 14.3% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Ramblers was Marques Townes who had 14 points, 2 assists, and a rebound.
On the season, Loyola-Chicago is averaging 68.4 ppg on 49.7% shooting from the field. The Ramblers are averaging 6.4 three-pointers per game on 34.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Loyola-Chicago has been led by Clayton Custer (13.9 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.3 spg), Marques Townes (13.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.8 apg), Cameron Krutwig (13.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 2.2 apg), and Lucas Williamson (8.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.1 spg).
Defensively, Loyola-Chicago is holding their opponents to an average of 60.9 ppg on 42.4% shooting from the field. The Ramblers have a rebound margin of 1.9 and a turnover margin of 0.2.
The Redbirds are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games vs. MVC opponents, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Ramblers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games vs. MVC opponents.
Illinois State might have won their last two games, however, they’ve lost 5 of their last 8 games and have gone 0-3 in road games in that span. The Redbirds have been below average on both ends of the court this season as they rank just 213th in scoring offense, 226th in FG%, and 240th in scoring defense. It was an ugly showing for Loyola-Chicago against Evansville however, the Ramblers have won 4 of their last 6 games. Loyola-Chicago relies on their defense that ranks 11th in scoring defense, and although they don’t put many points on the board as they rank 295th in scoring offense, Loyola-Chicago does rank 19th in FG%.
Loyola-Chicago is not as talented as a team that we saw make that magical run to the final four last season, however, they are still a very good team that should contend for the MVC title by the end of the season. Illinois State is 0-4 on the road this season and as I expect a bounce back performance by the Ramblers in this one, I think their defense will give the Redbirds enough trouble so they can win by double-digits and cover this spread.
