The Iona Gaels will travel to McCann Arena to take on the Marist Red Foxes this Thursday night in College Basketball action.

The Iona Gaels dropped to 7-12 (5-3 MAAC) on the season after being defeated by the Fairfield Stags, 80-68, this past Sunday. Iona struggled from the defensive end against the Stags and couldn’t fight back after Fairfield took a 42-25 lead at halftime. Iona struggled with turnovers, losing the turnover battle by a 19-11 margin and allowed Fairfield to shoot 45.8% from the field in the loss. Leading the way for the Gaels was E.J. Crawford who had 28 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.

On the season, Iona is averaging 80.1 ppg on 46.5% shooting from the field. The Gaels are averaging 8.7 three-pointers per game on 34.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Iona has been led by E.J. Crawford (17.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.9 apg), Rickey McGill (15.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 5.2 apg, 2.3 spg), Asante Gist (12.7 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.1 apg), and Tajuan Agee (12.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg).

Defensively, Iona is allowing their opponents to average 82.6 ppg on 46.0% shooting from the field. The Gaels have a rebound margin of -4.2 and a turnover margin of -0.2.

The Marist Red Foxes lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 7-13 (2-6 MAAC) on the season after being defeated by the Rider Broncs, 86-85, this past Sunday. Marist led by a 59-43 margin with 13:46 left in the 2nd half, however, allowed Rider to fight back in the game with a 16-0 run and couldn’t fight back after the Broncs took a 79-73 lead with 2:23 left in regulation. Marist shot 50.0% from the field & 55.6% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Red Foxes was Ryan Funk who had 32 points, 5 rebounds, and an assist.

On the season, Marist is averaging 68.6 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Red Foxes are averaging 8.5 three-pointers per game on 37.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Marist has been led by Brian Parker (15.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.6 apg), Ryan Funk (11.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg), Isaiah Lamb (8.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg), and Darius Hines (7.5 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.7 apg).

Defensively, Marist is allowing their opponents to average 71.1 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field. The Red Foxes have a rebound margin of -2.2 and are averaging 5.7 steals per game.

The Gaels are 13-33 ATS in their last 46 Thursday games and just 5-15 ATS in their last 20 games overall. The Red Foxes are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Iona has won 5 of their last 8 games and although their fast-paced offense has the Gaels ranked 40th in scoring offense, Iona has really struggled keeping opponents off the board this season as they currently rank just 346th in scoring defense & 290th in defensive FG%. Marist has lost 5 of their last 6 games and although their offense ranks 130th in FG% & 41st in 3P-FG%, the Red Foxes have had trouble getting points up on the board as they currently rank just 288th in scoring offense.

Iona was able to defeat Marist by a 90-77 margin earlier this season, however, it’s been a struggle for the Gaels on the road this season as they are just 1-8 in away games. It’s been a tough season for the Red Foxes, however, Marist was impressive recently on the road against the MAAC leading Rider Broncs and should have some confidence on the offensive end after averaging over 80.0 ppg in their last two games. Iona has dominated this series as of late, however, Marist is a solid three-point shooting team that should have some success against the struggling Gaels defense, and I think the Red Foxes will be able to do enough at home to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
