Marquette Golden Eagles -5.5 -- Over/Under: 138.5
The Providence Friars and the Marquette Golden Eagles meet in Big East conference college basketball action from the Fiserv Forum on Sunday afternoon.
The Providence Friars come into this game looking to build on a 72-63 win over Seton Hall in their last outing. David Duke led the Friars with 18 points on 4 of 7 shooting with a pair of threes and a 7 of 8 mark from the foul line while Alpha Diallo added 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting with team-highs of 8 rebounds and 5 assists as the only other Providence player to score in double figures in the winning effort. Maliek White added 7 points and 3 steals while Makai Ashton-Langford added 4 points and 5 assists of his own as well in the win. Diallo leads the Friars with an average of 17.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game this season. As a team, Providence is averaging 74.5 points per game on 43.7% shooting from the field, 36.7% from behind the 3-point line and 66.6% from the foul line this season.
The Marquette Golden Eagles will look to build on their current 4-game winning streak after earning a 74-71 win over Georgetown in their last outing. Sam Hauser led the Golden Eagles with 31 points on 10 of 20 shooting with 4 threes, a perfect 7 of 7 mark from the foul line and 8 rebounds while Theo John chipped in 14 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Joey Hauser and Sacar Anim each had 10 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Marquette in the win, with Hauser adding 8 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists as well in the win. Brendan Bailey also added 9 points and 4 blocks as well in the victory. Markus Howard played just 3 minutes because of lower-back tightness and is questionable for this game, but still leads the Golden Eagles with an average of 24.4 points and 4.2 assists per game while Sam Hauser leads Marquette on the glass with 6.9 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Marquette is averaging 79.3 points per game on 45.9% shooting from the field, 38.3% from 3-point range and 75.3% from the foul line this season.
Providence is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games while the under is 6-1-1 in their last 8 conference games. Marquette is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 conference games. Providence is 4-14 ATS in the last 18 meetings between these two teams and 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these two teams at Marquette.
Markus Howard is a game-time decision for this game, but even still, I like Marquette here. The Golden Eagles showed that they have the depth to carry on even when their leading scorer goes down due to injury as the rest of the team picked up the pieces to still take down Georgetown. Providence had a solid win over Seton Hall, but I still worry that the Friars rely too heavily on Alpha Diallo and the Friars have a tendency to go through scoring droughts and that won't fly against a Marquette team that can light up the scoreboard. Add in the fact that Marquette has really gotten the upper hand against the Friars here, and I think you have to lay the points with Marquette in this spot.
