The Xavier Musketeers will travel to Fiserv Forum to take on the 16th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles this Sunday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Xavier Musketeers had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 9-6 (1-1 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the Seton Hall Pirates, 80-70, this past Wednesday. Xavier held a 42-38 lead at halftime, however, struggled offensively in the 2nd half and couldn’t fight back after a 6-0 Pirates run gave Seton Hall a 74-68 lead with 1:27 left in regulation. Xavier allowed Seton Hall to shoot 50.8% from the field while the Musketeers struggled from beyond the arc hitting just 26.7% (4-15) of their three-point attempts. Leading the way for the Musketeers was Paul Scruggs who had 22 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.
On the season, Xavier is averaging 75.0 ppg on 48.4% shooting from the field. The Musketeers are averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game on 33.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Xavier has been led by Quentin Goodin (13.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.7 apg, 1.7 spg), Naji Marshall (12.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.1 spg), Paul Scruggs (12.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.5 spg), and Tyrique Jones (10.0 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.1 spg).
Defensively, Xavier is allowing their opponents to average 70.7 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Musketeers have a rebound margin of 4.1 and a turnover margin of -1.5.
The 16th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles had their 8-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 11-3 (0-1 Big East) on the season after being defeated by the St. John’s Red Storm, 89-69, this past Tuesday. Marquette trailed by a 39-31 margin at halftime and couldn’t fight back after a 9-1 St. John’s run gave the Red Storm a 72-52 lead with 7:45 left in regulation. Marquette shot just 41.9% from the field while allowing the Red Storm to shoot 53.6% from the field & 45.8% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Joey Hauser who had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal.
On the season, Marquette is averaging 79.1 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are averaging 9.3 three-pointers per game on 38.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Marquette has been led by Markus Howard (23.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.9 apg, 1.1 spg), Sam Hauser (14.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.2 apg), Joey Hauser (10.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.2 apg), and Sacar Anim (6.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg).
Defensively, Marquette is allowing their opponents to average 67.7 ppg on 39.7% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles have a rebound margin of 8.4 and a turnover margin of -2.2.
The Musketeers are 3-1-2 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss, however, are just 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Xavier has split their last 6 games and have been nothing more than average on both sides of the court as they currently rank T-158th in scoring offense & 171st in scoring defense. Marquette has a high-powered offense led by Markus Howard which currently ranks 74th in scoring offense and although their defense struggled agianst St. John’s, it’s been solid overall this season as the Golden Eagles currently rank T-91st in scoring defense & 50th in defensive FG%.
Xavier is just 2-4 in away/neutral court games this season and as I think that Markus Howard and the Golden Eagles defense will get back on track at home in this one, I’m taking Marquette to cover this mid-range home spread. Good Luck!
