The UTEP Miners and the Marshall Thundering Herd meet in C-USA college basketball action from the Henderson Center on Thursday night.

The UTEP Miners will look to build some momentum after a 57-53 win over Charlotte in their last outing. Evan Gilyard led the Miners with 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting with a pair of threes while Nigel Hawkins added 12 points along with a team-high 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Paul Thomas added 11 points with 7 rebounds and a pair of steals to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Miners in the winning effort. Gilyard leads UTEP in scoring with 16.4 points per game while Efe Odigie leads the Miners in rebounding with 9.4 rebounds per game and Jordan Lathon leads UTEP in assists with 3.1 assists per game this season. As a team, UTEP is averaging 65.2 points per game on 41.9% shooting from the field, 33.7% from behind the arc and 65.2% from the foul line this season.

The Marshall Thundering Herd will be out to snap a 3-game losing streak after being blown out by Southern Miss by a final score of 101-51. C.J. Burks, Jon Elmore and Darius George each had 11 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Marshall in the loss. George added 3 threes while Elmore shot 4 of 10 with a pair of threes and Burks had a 4 of 4 mark from the foul line. Taevion Kinsey added 4 points to match his team-high 4 rebounds while Jannson Williams added 4 points and a pair of steals. Elmore leads Marshall with an average of 19 points and 5.1 assists per game while Williams leads the Herd in rebounding with 4.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Marshall is averaging 79.2 points per game on 44.1% shooting from the field, 32.7% from behind the arc and 71.2% from the foul line this season.

UTEP is 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 road games while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 conference games. Marshall is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 home games while the under is 9-4 in their last 13 games following a loss. UTEP is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.

UTEP is not a great offensive team by any stretch, and you’re going to have a hard time covering games against solid offensive teams like Marshall when you have issues scoring 65 points per game. However, as good as Marshall can be, the Herd just got slapped by 50 points, and have been held to 59 and 51 points in 2 of their 3 losses during this little losing skid they’ve been on. I’m not touching this game personally, but if forced to pick, I’d take UTEP as the Miners have shown the ability to play defense to keep teams within reach, with 5 of their last 7 games being decided by 7 points or less.

UTEP +11
