Maryland Terrapins -8.5 -- Over/Under: 134
The Northwestern Wildcats and the Maryland Terrapins meet in Big Ten conference college basketball action from the Xfinity Center on Tuesday night.
The Northwestern Wildcats come into this game looking to find some consistency after splitting their last 14 games following a 62-46 loss to Wisconsin in their last outing. No Wildcat scored in double figures in the losing effort, with Dererk Pardon and Anthony Gaines tying for the team-high with 8 points, with Pardon pulling down a share of the team-high with 11 rebounds while Gaines had a team-high 3 assists. Vic Law was one of 5 Wildcats with 6 points to round out Northwestern’s scoring in the loss, pulling down 11 rebounds of his own in the losing effort. Law leads Northwestern in scoring with 15.8 points per game while Pardon leads the Wildcats in rebounding with 7.8 rebounds per game and A.J. Turner leads Northwestern in assists with 3.4 helpers per game this season. As a team, Northwestern is averaging 69.3 points per game on 42% shooting from the field, 33.9% from behind the 3-point line and 73.6% from the foul line this season.
The Maryland Terrapins will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after a disappointing 78-67 loss to Illinois in their last outing. Bruno Fernando led the Terps with 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting with a 7 of 8 mark from the foul line and a game-high 10 rebounds for the double-double while Anthony Cowan came right behind with 18 points and a team-high 5 assists. Jalen Smith added 11 points and 7 rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Maryland in the losing effort. Cowan leads the Terps with an average of 17.4 points and 4.6 assists per game while Fernando is averaging a double-double per game with 14.6 points to go along with his team-leading 10.3 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Maryland is averaging 75.2 points per game on 46.9% shooting from the floor, 36.7% from behind the 3-point line and 75.4% from the foul line this season.
Northwestern is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 road games while the under is 7-2-1 in their last 10 conference games. Maryland is 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 home games and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 Tuesday games while the under is 10-2 in their last 12 games following a loss. The road team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.
Northwestern has struggled with consistency as of late, and it’s hard to get behind a team that scored just 46 points in their last outing, albeit against an always-tough Wisconsin team. However, Maryland’s loss to Illinois dealt a huge blow to my confidence in the Terps and Northwestern is an experienced team that doesn’t just go away easily. The Wildcats play a grind it out style of basketball and nothing comes easy in those types of games. Add in the success that the road team has had in this spot, I’ll take a shot with Northwestern and the points here.
