SoCon college basketball rivals the VMI Keydets and Mercer Bears butt heads on Thursday.

The VMI Keydets have struggled to score the basketball in 2017-18 and those struggles have led to four straight defeats capped off by a 70-56 loss to ETSU. The Buccaneers broke open a one point game with a 36-23 second half run with VMI finishing the game with 34.4% shooting.

The Keydets lacked explosiveness at the offensive end with Garrett Gilkeson  leading the way with 14 points, six boards and four steals on 5-11. Jordan Ratliffe gave the Keydets 12 points on 5-9 while Bubba Parham added eleven points and six rebounds on 3-14.

The Mercer Bears have an outside shot at moving up the conference standings and the team is moving in that direction with three wins in a row after downing Samford 74-69 with a small 45.6%-43.4% shooting advantage being the difference.

Ross Cummings topped the Bears offense with 21 points on 7-15 followed by Jordan Strawberry with 18 points, six boards and seven assists on 6-13. Mercer received ten points and seven rebounds from Demetre Rivers while Ryan Johnson and Stephon Jelks chipped in with seven points each.

Under is 23-6 in VMI last 29 overall and under is 20-6 in VMI last 26 vs. Southern and VMI are 6-14-1 ATS in their last 21 road games. Mercer are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games. VMI are 2-5-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings and favorite is 5-2-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.

I like Mercer and they can certainly put a hurting on a limited VMI but the large number is scary…

Pick:
VMI +17

I have been a sports fan since I was old enough to pick up a ball and have always been drawn to competition. I don't participate in sporting events any longer but I do like to provide my opinion on games and writing gives me that outlet. I won't always be right but I always put 100% in to every article I do whether it's the World Series or an 0-10 college football team. Mitch shares that same passion and allows me to express myself in my own way.
