Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Omaha Mavericks and the Minnesota Golden Gophers will match up in college basketball action on Tuesday from Williams Arena.

Omaha is coming off a disappointing campaign last year where they finished 9-22, with a 4-10 record in Summit League play for a seventh-place finish. The Mavericks lost in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals to South Dakota state to end their season.

Omaha is a pretty young team overall, but they’ve got a pair of returning seniors in Mitch Hahn and Zach Jackson who should be able to offer some leadership to the new arrivals.

Over on the Minnesota side, they finished at 15-17 overall and logged a tepid 4-14 record in a tough Big Ten Conference. The Gophers were the 11th seed in the Big Ten Tournament, where they dropped out in the first round versus Rutgers.

Minnesota lost Nate Mason, Gaston Diedhiou and Bokary Konate to graduation this year, but added a couple of interesting recruits in Daniel Oturu and Gae Kalscheur, who each offer a different set of skills on the court.

The Mavericks are 5-0 ATS in their last five versus the Big Ten and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five road games. Omaha is also 0-4-1 ATS in their last five overall and the over is 4-0 in their last four versus the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, the Gophers are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 overall and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 Tuesday games. Minnesota is 1-5 ATS in their last six non-conference games and 1-7 ATS in their last eight home games.

The good news for Omaha is that after this game they’ve got a couple of home matchups and a handful of winnable games on the horizon in the early-going.

Minnesota, meanwhile, is likely destined to get lost in the Big Ten shuffle once again but does have a few interesting guys on the younger end of the roster who will be fun to watch once they get acclimated.

I’m just going to play it safe here and take Minnesota.
