Minnesota Golden Gophers -10.5 -- Over/Under: 132.5
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Minnesota Golden Gophers meet in Big Ten conference college basketball action from the Williams Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will look to build on their first conference win of the year coming in the form of a 64-61 win over Ohio State in their last outing. Montez Mathis led the Knights with 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting while Geo Baker came right behind with 15 points and a team-high 4 assists. Ron Harper Jr. added 12 points and Shaw Carter added 11 points and a team-high 7 rebounds to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Rutgers in the win. Shaquille Doorson also added 5 points with 6 rebounds and 3 blocks as well in the victory. Eugene Omoruyi left the game with an injured ankle, but still leads Rutgers with an average of 14.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while Baker leads the Scarlet Knights in assists with 4.7 assists per game this season. As a team, Rutgers is averaging 68.3 points per game on 40.8% shooting from the field, 31.1% from behind the arc and 63.7% from the foul line this season.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers will look to rebound after suffering an 82-67 loss to Maryland in their last outing. Amir Coffey led the Gophers with 16 points along with a team-high 5 assists while Gabe Kalscheur added 13 points on 4 of 6 shooting with 3 threes and Daniel Oturu added 11 points to match his 11 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the double-double. Dupree McBrayer added 10 points to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Minnesota in the loss while Jordan Murphy chipped in 9 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Coffey leads Minnesota in scoring with 15.5 points per game while Murphy leads the Golden Gophers in rebounding by averaging a double-double per game with 14.5 points to go along with his team-leading 12 rebounds per game and Isaiah Washington leads Minnesota in assists with 3.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Minnesota is averaging 74.5 points per game on 43.9% shooting from the field, 31.7% from behind the arc and 65.9% from the foul line this season.
Rutgers is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 conference games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record. Minnesota is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games and 11-27 ATS in their last 38 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 Saturday games. The favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
Minnesota has been one of the tougher teams to beat in the Big Ten as the Golden Gophers are balanced and have some serious depth with the likes of Coffey and Murphy leading the charge. However, while I’ve been one of the first to fade Rutgers in my time betting on college basketball, the fact is that the Scarlet Knights have been tough to put away on the road, with none of their 4 road games being decided by more than 8 points this season. The Scarlet Knights also have to be feeling pretty good after a big win over Ohio State in their last outing, so while the favorite has had a lot of the success in this matchup, I think the points and Rutgers hold some serious value so I’ll take a chance with the Scarlet Knights on Saturday.
