The Line: Monmouth Hawks -6 -- Over/Under:
We have some MAAC-tion on the college basketball schedule on Friday, as the Manhattan Jaspers take on the Monmouth Hawks.
The Manhattan Jaspers will look to remain unbeaten in conference play after jumping to 2-0 in MAAC play with a 101-96 overtime win over Marist in their last outing. Zane Waterman led the team with 23 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 12 rebounds and 3 steals for the double-double, while Rich Williams added 20 points with an 11 for 11 mark from the foul line with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Pauly Paulicap added 19 points and 7 rebounds, while Zavier Turner added 12 points with a team-high 5 assists and Aaron Walker Jr. added 10 points with 3 steals of his own to round out the double-digit scoring for the Jaspers in the win. Williams leads the team in scoring this season with an average of 12.4 points per game while Waterman is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.5 rebounds per game and Turner is the team’s leading assist man with 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Manhattan is scoring 68.9 points per game on 45.8% shooting from the field, 38.1% from behind the arc and 66.9% from the foul line this season.
The Monmouth Hawks will hope that some home cooking will cure what ails them after falling to 0-2 in conference play with a 77-64 road loss at Saint Peter’s in their last outing, dropping their 6th decision in their last 7 games. Micah Seaborn led the team with 16 points on 4 of 7 shooting with a pair of threes and a perfect 6 for 6 mark from the foul line, while Austin Tilghman added 10 points as the only other Hawk to finish in double figures scoring in the loss. Ray Salnave added a team-high 6 rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Deion Hammond added a pair of steals in the losing effort. Hammond leads the team in scoring with an average of 10.9 points per game, while Tilghman leads the team with an average of 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Monmouth is scoring 73.5 points per game on 45.6% shooting from the field, 39% from behind the arc and 68.6% from the foul line this season.
Manhattan is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 21-6-1 in their last 28 games overall. Monmouth is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 games following a loss. Manhattan is 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
I’m flat out stunned that Monmouth is the favourite here. The Hawks have yet to cover at home this season, while Manhattan has an above .500 record ATS this season and have been in much better form than Monmouth. Not to mention the Jaspers have had all of the success in this matchup ATS over the years. I’ll take the points as I think Manhattan has a good chance at winning outright.
