The Eastern Kentucky Colonels snapped a 4-game losing streak and improved to 11-14 (4-8 OVC) on the season after defeating the Tennessee State Tigers, 75-65, this past Saturday night. Eastern Kentucky was solid defensively agianst the Tigers and the Colonels were able to pull away in the 2nd half for the victory after taking a 55-45 lead with just 6:26 left in regulation. Eastern Kentucky held Tennessee State to just 36.4% shooting from the field and 21.4% shooting from beyond the arc in the win. Leading the way for the Colonels was Jomaru Brown who had 30 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.
On the season, Eastern Kentucky is averaging 83.7 ppg on 42.8% shooting from the field. The Colonels are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 32.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Eastern Kentucky has been led by Nick Mayo (22.8 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.2 spg, 1.9 bpg), Jomaru Brown (13.4 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.8 spg), Dujuanta Weaver (10.2 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.3 spg), and Kelvin Robinson (8.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.4 spg).
Defensively, Eastern Kentucky is allowing their opponents to average 82.8 ppg on 46.5% shooting from the field. The Colonels have a rebound margin of -3.1 and a turnover margin of 4.2.
The Morehead State Eagles lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 9-16 (5-7 OVC) on the season after being defeated by the Belmont Bruins, 96-86, this past Saturday. Morehead State struggled defensively against the high-scoring Belmont offense and couldn’t fight back after going into halftime trailing by a 53-37 margin. Morehead State allowed Belmont to shoot 52.5% from the field and 50.0% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Eagles was A.J. Hicks who had 22 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
On the season, Morehead State is averaging 74.8 ppg on 43.1% shooting from the field. The Eagles are averaging 7.9 three-pointers per game on 34.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Morehead State has been led by Jordan Walker (16.2 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.2 spg), Lamontray Harris (13.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.6 apg), A.J. Hicks (12.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 5.4 apg, 1.8 spg), and De’Von Cooper (8.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.0 spg).
Defensively, Morehead State is allowing their opponents to average 78.4 ppg on 47.3% shooting from the field. The Eagles have a rebound margin of -1.6 and a turnover margin of 1.4.
The Colonels are 9-4-2 ATS in their last 15 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, however, are just 2-6-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win. The Eagles are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss and just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Eastern Kentucky has lost 6 of their last 10 games and although their offense has done a nice job putting points up on the board as the Colonels rank 14th in scoring offense, the defense has really struggled as they currently rank just 346th in scoring defense & 309th in defensive FG%.
Morehead State has lost 4 of their last 5 games and currently rank 130th in scoring offense, T-322nd in scoring defense, and 329th in defensive FG%.
Eastern Kentucky has struggled on the road this season, posting just a 2-9 record, however, this is a match-up that I think Nick Mayo and the Colonels offense can exploit as the Morehead State defense has allowed opponents to average 84.5 ppg over their last 4 games. Eastern Kentucky has done a solid job forcing turnovers this season and as I think the Colonels will be able to put up plenty of points in this one, I’m taking Eastern Kentucky and the points. Good Luck!
