Morehead State Eagles -6 -- Over/Under: 147
The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars and Morehead State Eagles will square off at the Ford Center this Wednesday night in the 1st round of the OVC Men’s Championship.
The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars finished their regular season with a 10-20 overall record and earned the 8-seed in the OVC Men’s Championship after finishing conference play with a 6-12 record. It was a tough season for the Cougars who had only one winning streak of more than 2 games on the season and come into the conference tournament losing 5 of their last 7 games. SIU-Edwardsville really struggled on both sides of the ball this season as the Cougars come into this game ranked just 303rd in FG%, 345th in scoring defense, and 350th in defensive FG%.
On the season, SIU-Edwardsville is averaging 73.2 ppg on 41.7% shooting from the field. The Cougars are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game on 30.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, SIU-Edwardsville has been led by David McFarland (13.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.6 spg), Brandon Jackson (13.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg), Tyresse Williford (13.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.8 apg), and Cameron Williams (10.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.1 spg).
Defensively, SIU-Edwardsville is allowing their opponents to average 81.6 ppg on 49.2% shooting from the field. The Cougars have a rebound margin of -2.8 and a turnover margin of 0.2.
The Morehead State Eagles finished their regular season with an overall record of 12-19 and earned the 5-seed in the OVC Men’s Championship after finishing conference play with an 8-10 record. Morehead State had all sorts of trouble in a difficult non-conference schedule and after they got through a tough beginning of their conference schedule with games against Murray State, Austin Peay, & Belmont, the Eagles were able to turn their season around as they went 8-7 over their last 15 games. Morehead State struggled a bit defensively as the Eagles come into this match-up ranked just 301st in scoring defense & 283rd in defensive FG%, however, were able to put some points on the board as they rank 146th in scoring offense.
On the season, Morehead State is averaging 73.5 ppg on 42.6% shooting from the field. The Eagles are averaging 7.8 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Morehead State has been led by Jordan Walker (15.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.2 spg), Lamontray Harris (13.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.6 apg), A.J. Hicks (12.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.7 spg), and De’Von Cooper (8.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.6 apg).
Defensively, Morehead State is allowing their opponents to average 76.8 ppg on 45.6% shooting from the field. The Eagles have a rebound margin of -1.2 and a turnover margin of 0.6.
The Cougars are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games. The Eagles are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall, however, are just 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
SIU-Edwardsville was able to win the only match-up against these two teams this season as the Cougars won by an 83-76 margin at home in late January.
SIU-Edwardsville might have been able to beat the Eagles at home this season, but I have a hard time trusting the Cougars away from home as between away games and neutral court games, SIU-Edwardsville picked up just 3 wins this season. Morehead State wasn’t much better away from home, however, this team has shown me more as of late as the Eagles were competitive recently in losses against some of the OVC best in Belmont, Austin Peay, and Jacksonville State. Morehead State should have no problems generating some offense against the Cougars in this one and I think the Eagles will be able to advance while covering this mid-range spread. Good Luck!
