The UT Martin Skyhawks will travel to Ellis T. Johnson Arena to take on the Morehead State Eagles this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The UT Martin Skyhawks lost their 7th straight game and dropped to 5-11 (0-5 OVC) on the season after being defeated by the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, 97-73, this past Thursday. UT Martin had no answers for the Colonels on the defensive end and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 55-30 margin at halftime. UT Martin allowed Eastern Kentucky to shoot 48.7% from the field and committed 23 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Skyhawks was Jailen Gill who had 19 points, 8 rebounds, and an assist.
On the season, UT Martin is averaging 76.8 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Skyhawks are averaging 7.9 three-pointers per game on 31.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UT Martin has been led by Preston Parks (12.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.6 spg), Quintin Dove (11.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg), Fatodd Lewis (10.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Kevin Little (10.9 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.4 spg).
Defensively, UT Martin is allowing their opponents to average 82.4 ppg on 49.3% shooting from the field. The Skyhawks have a rebound margin of -2.1 and a turnover margin of 0.7.
The Morehead State Eagles won their 2nd straight game and improved to 6-12 (2-3 Horizon) on the season after defeating the SE Missouri State RedHawks, 73-69, this past Thursday. Morehead State trailed by 58-47 margin with just 7:21 left in regulation, however, was outstanding offensively down the stretch and to hang on for the victory after a A.J. Hicks jumper gave the Eagles a 70-67 lead with just :43 seconds left in regulation. Morehead State shot 45.3% from the field and 44.0% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Eagles was Lamontray Harris who had 19 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks.
On the season, Morehead State is averaging 73.4 ppg on 42.1% shooting from the field. The Eagles are averaging 7.7 three-pointers per game on 33.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Morehead State has been led by Jordan Walker (14.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.3 spg), Lamontray Harris (13.6 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 1.4 apg), A.J. Hicks (11.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 5.5 apg, 1.9 spg), De’Von Cooper (8.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.1 spg).
Defensively, Morehead State is allowing their opponents to average 78.1 ppg on 46.3% shooting from the field. The Eagles have a rebound margin of -1.4 and a turnover margin of 1.2.
The Skyhawks are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Saturday games and just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss. The Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record, however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
UT-Martin is still searching for their first OVC win on the season, however, it’s going to be hard for the Skyhawks to pick up many wins this season unless they improve their defense that ranks 343rd in scoring defense & 343rd in defensive FG%. Morehead State is on a 2-game winning streak however, this is still a team that has lost 7 of their last 10 games and like the Skyhawks, have struggled defensively as they rank just 308th in scoring defense & 301st in defensive FG%.
Morehead State is not the strongest OVC team, however, they are 4-2 at home this season which includes a solid victory over IUPUI. UT-Martin has yet to win on the road this season and I just don’t think their defense will be able to keep this one close, I’m taking Morehead State to cover this mid-range home spread.
