The Eastern Illinois Panthers will travel to the CFSB Center to take on the Murray State Racers this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The Eastern Illinois Panthers dropped to 13-10 (6-4 OVC) on the season after being defeated by the Morehead State Eagles, 84-78, this past Saturday. Eastern Illinois led by a 38-34 margin at halftime, however, struggled defensively in the 2nd half against the Eagles and couldn’t fight back after a 7-0 Eagles run gave Morehead State a 74-69 lead with just :42 seconds left in regulation. Eastern Illinois shot 52.5% from the field, however, allowed the Eagles to shoot 47.1% from beyond the arc and lost the turnover battle by a 16-11 margin. Leading the way for the Panthers was Kashawn Charles who had 19 points, 2 rebounds, and an assist.
On the season, Eastern Illinois is averaging 71.7 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Panthers are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game on 37.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Eastern Illinois has been led by Josiah Wallace (15.4 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.0 apg), Mack Smith (12.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.1 apg), Ben Harvey (9.4 ppg, 3.9 rpg), and Shareef Smith (8.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.2 spg).
Defensively, Eastern Illinois is allowing their opponents to average 74.8 ppg on 44.4% shooting from the field. The Panthers have a rebound margin of -1.0 and a turnover margin of 0.1.
The Murray State Racers improved to 17-4 (8-2 OVC) on the season after defeating the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 67-63, this past Saturday. Murray State had a hard time getting their offense rolling against the Golden Eagles, however, was able to avoid the upset loss after a closing out the final 4:29 of regulation on a 14-4 run. Murray State shot 45.3% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Racers was Ja Morant who had 28 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.
On the season, Murray State is averaging 82.3 ppg on 49.1% shooting from the field. The Racers are averaging 8.1 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Murray State has been led by Ja Morant (24.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 10.3 apg, 2.0 spg), Shaq Buchanan (13.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, 2.0 spg), Tevin Brown (12.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.1 spg), and Darnell Cowart (8.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg).
Defensively, Murray State is holding their opponents to an average of 67.3 ppg on 41.3% shooting from the field. The Racers have a rebound margin of 3.5 and a turnover margin of 2.4.
The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Racers are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
Eastern Illinois has won 3 of their last 5 games and haven’t been outstanding on either side of the court this season as the Panthers currently rank just 219th in scoring offense, 254th in FG%, and 259th in scoring defense.
Murray State has won 9 of their last 11 games and has been outstanding on both ends of the court as they currently rank 25th in scoring offense, 13th in FG%, and 74th in scoring defense.
Murray State has struggled a bit as of late, however, they have one of the best players in all of College Basketball in Ja Morant and currently are 10-1 at home this season. The Racers defeated Eastern Illinois by a 83-61 margin on the road earlier this season and as I think the Racers will dominate on both ends of the court once again, I’m taking Murray State to cover this large home spread.
