The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars will travel to the CFSB Center to take on the Murray State Racers this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The SIU-Edwardsville Cougars had their 2-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-15 (4-7 OVC) on the season after being defeated by the Austin Peay Governors, 80-45, this past Thursday night. SIU-Edwardsville came out of the gates flat in this one and had no change fighting back into the game after Austin Peay took a 36-5 lead with 6:12 left in the 1st half. SIU-Edwardsville shot just 32.0% from the field and 15.4% from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Cougars was Brandon Jackson who had 12 points and 8 rebounds.
On the season, SIU-Edwardsville is averaging 73.9 ppg on 41.5% shooting from the field. The Cougars are averaging 6.3 three-pointers per game on 28.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, SIU-Edwardsville has been led by Tyresse Williford (14.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.0 apg), David McFarland (14.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.7 spg), Brandon Jackson (13.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg), and Cameron Williams (10.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.1 spg).
Defensively, SIU-Edwardsville is allowing their opponents to average 81.0 ppg on 49.2% shooting from the field. The Cougars have a rebound margin of -1.5 and a turnover margin of 1.0.
The Murray State Racers won their 2nd straight game and improved to 18-4 (9-2 OVC) on the season after defeating the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 86-75, this past Thursday. Murray State had more of a game than expected from the Panthers and even trailed by a 71-64 margin midway though the 2nd half, however, the Racers were outstanding defensively down the stretch and pulled away after taking a 15-0 run gave them a 79-71 lead with 4:09 left in regulation. SIU-Edwardsville shot 44.6% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 14-9 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Racers was Darnell Cowart who had 23 points & 12 rebounds.
On the season, Murray State is averaging 82.5 ppg on 48.9% shooting from the field. The Racers are averaging 8.2 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Murray State has been led by Ja Morant (24.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 10.4 apg, 2.0 spg), Shaq Buchanan (13.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.8 apg, 2.0 spg), Tevin Brown (11.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.2 spg), and Darnell Cowart (9.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg).
Defensively, Murray State is holding their opponents to an average of 67.7 ppg on 41.5% shooting from the field. The Racers have a rebound margin of 3.5 and a turnover margin of 2.5.
The Cougars are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Racers are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Saturday games, however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games.
SIU-Edwardsville has lost 7 of their last 10 games and have really struggled defensively this season as they rank just 340th in scoring defense & 348th in defensive FG%.
Murray State has won 10 of their last 12 games and have been solid on both ends of the court this season as they rank T-21st in scoring offense, 17th in FG%, and T-82nd in scoring defense.
Murray State is one of the better mid-major teams in all of College Basketball and has one of the best players in all of College Basketball in Ja Morant, however, the Racers have struggled a bit as of late as they’ve won just 3 of their last 5 and are coming off close games against Tennessee Tech and Eastern Illinois. SIU-Edwardsville has played better as of late, winning 3 of their last 5, and as they lost by just a 82-72 margin at home agianst the Racers earlier this season, I think the Cougars will do enough to cover with the points. Good Luck!
