San Diego State Aztecs -1 -- Over/Under: 151.5
The San Diego State Aztecs and the New Mexico Lobos meet in Mountain West conference college basketball action from the Dreamstyle Arena on Tuesday night.
The San Diego State Aztecs will look to build on their current 3-game winning streak after a 67-56 win over San Jose State in their last outing. Devin Watson led the Aztecs with 27 points on 9 of 11 shooting with 5 threes and a team-high 6 assists while Jalen McDaniels added 22 points on 10 of 18 shooting with a pair of threes and a team-high 9 rebounds and Jeremy Hemsley chipped in 11 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for San Diego State in the winning effort. McDaniels leads San Diego State with an average of 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while Watson leads the Aztecs in assists with 4.9 assists per game this season. As a team, San Diego State is averaging 75.3 points per game on 45.9% shooting from the field, 37.3% from behind the 3-point line and 73.5% from the foul line this season.
The New Mexico Lobos could use a win after losing 3 straight and 6 of their last 7 games following an 82-70 loss to Fresno State in their last outing. Anthony Mathis led the Lobos with 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting from 3-point range while Vance Jackson added 16 points and Keith McGee chipped in 10 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for New Mexico in the loss. Carlton Bragg added 7 points with a team-high 15 rebounds and a pair of blocks while Makuach Maluach had 7 points and a team-high 3 assists. Mathis leads New Mexico in scoring with 15.7 points per game while Jackson leads the Lobos with averages of 7.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this season. As a team, New Mexico is averaging 76.4 points per game on 42.7% shooting from the field, 35% from behind the 3-point line and 70.3% from the foul line this season.
San Diego State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games while the under is 16-5-1 in their last 22 games following a win. New Mexico is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 home games. The favorite is 12-5 ATS in the last 17 meetings between these two teams and the road team is 21-10 ATS in the last 31 meetings between these two teams.
I get that New Mexico at home should probably get the respect of a low line, so I understand it, but I’m still not buying it. The Lobos are still a sub-.500 team at home this season and while the Aztecs’ defense isn’t as vaunted as it once was, San Diego State still plays solid defense and are quite frankly the better team in this matchup. The Aztecs are also in much better form than the Lobos, so I’ll lay the point with San Diego State in this one.
