The Marshall Thundering Herd and the North Texas Mean Green meet in C-USA college basketball action from the Super Pit on Sunday afternoon.
The Marshall Thundering Herd come into this one looking to build on back-to-back victories after a 90-79 win over Louisiana Tech in their last outing. Jon Elmore led the Herd with 34 points on 10 of 17 shooting with 5 threes, a perfect 9 of 9 mark from the foul line, 6 rebounds and a team-high 7 assists. Jarrod West came 2nd with 15 points on 5 of 8 shooting with 4 threes and 4 assists while Taevion Kinsey added 13 points in 16 minutes. Jannson Williams added 11 points with 10 rebounds to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Marshall in the winning effort. Elmore leads Marshall with an average of 20 points and 5 assists per game while Williams leads the Thundering Herd in rebounding with 5.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Marshall is averaging 79.9 points per game on 43.8% shooting from the field, 33.5% from behind the arc and 73.2% from the foul line this season.
The North Texas Mean Green could use a win that would snap a 5-game losing streak after a 60-54 loss to FAU in their last outing. Umoja Gibson led the Mean Green with 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting with 5 threes and 3 steals while Roosevelt Smart added 12 points as the only other North Texas player to score in double figures in the loss. Michael Miller added a team-high 7 rebounds as well in the losing effort for the Mean Green. Gibson leads North Texas in scoring with 12.3 points per game while Zachary Simmons leads the Mean Green in rebounding with 6.4 rebounds per game and Ryan Woolridge leads North Texas in assists with 5 assists per game this season. As a team, North Texas is 70.3 points per game on 44.3% shooting from the field, 34.1% from behind the arc and 67.1% from the foul line this season.
Marshall is 1-10 ATS in their last 11 conference games and 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 games overall while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win. North Texas is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 2-10 ATS in their last 12 home games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games following a loss. The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
Neither of these two teams are ones I feel comfortable backing here, so I guess if you hae to play this game, it’s probably better to be on the side getting points. North Texas has fallen off a cliff from the team that entered conference play with just one loss, and while Marshall has been brutal ATS in conference play, the fact is that the Herd have at least been winning basketball games, which isn’t something that we can say for North Texas. I’ll take a shot with Marshall and the points in this one.
