The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks will travel to Matthews Arena to take on the Northeastern Huskies this Saturday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 7-16 (4-7 CAA) on the season after being defeated by the Hofstra Pride, 97-77, this past Thursday. UNC-Wilmington had no answers on the defensive end against Hofstra and couldn’t fight back after the Pride took a 74-56 lead with 11:09 left in regulation. UNC-Wilmington allowed Hofstra to shoot 63.0% from the field and 64.7% (11-17) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Seahawks was Jordon Talley who had 21 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists. On the season, UNC-Wilmington is averaging 79.1 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Seahawks are averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 34.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UNC-Wilmington has been led by DeVontae Cacok (17.1 ppg, 13.1 rpg, 1.0 apg), Jordon Talley (16.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 5.6 apg, 1.0 spg), Ty Taylor II (13.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.7 apg), and Jaylen Fornes (11.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.0 apg). Defensively, UNC-Wilmington is allowing their opponents to average 84.0 ppg on 48.5% shooting from the field. The Seahawks have a rebound margin of 5.0 and a turnover margin of -1.9.
The Northeastern Huskies lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 14-9 (7-4 CAA) on the season after being defeated by the College of Charleston Cougars, 69-64, this past Thursday. Northeastern had trouble getting their offense rolling against the Cougars and couldn’t fight back after College of Charleston took a 65-60 lead with 1:46 left in regulation. Northeastern shot just 37.3% from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Huskies was Donnell Gresham Jr. who had 18 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. On the season, Northeastern is averaging 73.2 ppg on 47.8% shooting from the field. The Huskies are averaging 8.9 three-pointers per game on 36.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Northeastern has been led by Vasa Pusica (15.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 5.0 apg, 1.1 spg), Shawn Occeus (10.8 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.0 spg), Donnell Gresham Jr. (9.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.6 apg), and Bolden Brace (7.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.2 apg). Defensively, Northeastern is holding their opponents to an average of 69.0 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Huskies have a rebound margin of 1.7 and a turnover margin of -1.7.
The Seahawks are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight up loss and just 2-7 ATS in their last 9 road games. The Huskies are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games.
UNC-Wilmington has a high scoring offense that ranks 63rd in scoring offense, however, it’s been a struggle for the Seahawks defensively this season as UNC-Wilmington comes into this matchup ranked 345th in scoring defense and 335th in defensive FG%. Northeastern has had a successful season led by their t-91st ranked scoring defense and 46th ranked FG%, however, the Huskies have struggled on the offensive end as of late as in their last two losses the Huskies are averaging just 65.5 ppg. Northeastern barley pulled out a victory in OT against UNC-Wilmington earlier this season and as I expect the Seahawks guards, Jordan Talley and Jaylen Fornes, to have another successful game against the Huskies, I think UNC-Wilmington does enough to cover with the points.
