The Sacramento State Hornets and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks meet in Big Sky conference college basketball action from the Walkup Skydome on Thursday night.
The Sacramento State Hornets come into this one looking to snap a 5-game losing skid after a 72-70 loss to Idaho State in their last outing. Marcus Graves led the Hornets with 27 points on 10 of 16 shooting with a team-high 4 assists while Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa added 16 points on 6 of 15 shooting with 4 threes and Joshua Patton chipped in 11 points with 3 blocks to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Sac State in the loss. Osi Nwachukwu and Bryce Fowler each had a team-high 8 rebounds as well in the losing effort. Graves leads Sacramento State with an average of 15.5 points and 5.2 assists per game while Patton leads the Hornets on the glass with 5.8 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Sacramento State is averaging 69.7 points per game on 44.4% shooting from the field, 30.1% from behind the 3-point line and 63.2% from the foul line this season.
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks will be looking for some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 5 games following an 84-82 loss to Southern Utah in their last outing. Jonathan Andre and Ted McCree tied for the team-high with 19 points with Andre shooting an efficient 8 of 10 from the floor with 10 rebounds for the double-double while McCree shot 7 of 16 with 5 threes. Luke Avdalovic added 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 4 threes while Carlos Hines added 10 points and a team-high 10 assists for a double-double of his own to round out the group of double-digit scorers for NAU in the losing effort. Andre leads Northern Arizona with an average of 12.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while Hines leads the Lumberjacks in assists with 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Northern Arizona is averaging 72.1 points per game on 43.1% shooting from the field, 34.4% from behind the arc and 70.5% from the foul line this season.
Sacramento State is 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record. Northern Arizona is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a team with a losing record. Sacramento State is 8-18 ATS in the last 26 meetings between these two teams and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 meetings between these two teams at Northern Arizona.
It’s not often I’d recommend backing a team that’s just 4-11 SU on the season against a team that’s just about .500. However, Sacramento State has had issues against the Lumberjacks over the years, both overall and on the road. The Hornets have also struggled mightily lately, and while Northern Arizona has struggled with consistency, the one thing that Sacramento State has done consistently as of late is lose basketball games. The line is fairly reasonable here, so given the history between these two teams, I’d lay the bucket with Northern Arizona here.
