The Drake Bulldogs will travel to the McLeod Center to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers this Sunday afternoon in College Basketball action.
The Drake Bulldogs improved to 12-4 (1-2 MVC) on the season after defeating the Southern Illinois Salukis, 82-70, this past Tuesday. Drake jumped all over the Salukis early in the one and had no trouble securing the victory after the Bulldogs went into halftime with a 43-22 lead. Drake shot 54.7% from the field & 52.0% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Noah Thomas who had 24 points, 4 assits, 1 rebound, and a steal.
On the season, Drake is averaging 80.8 ppg on 48.3% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 9.6 three-pointers per game on 36.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Drake has been led by Nick McGlynn (16.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.3 bpg), Nick Norton (14.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 5.9 apg, 1.2 spg), D.J. Wilkins (11.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 3.0 apg), and Brady Ellingson (10.3 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.5 apg).
Defensively, Drake is allowing their opponents to average 73.8 ppg on 43.3% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of 0.7 and a turnover margin of -0.7.
The Northern Iowa Panthers lost their 2nd straight game and dropped to 6-10 (1-2 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Illinois State Redbirds, 70-69, on January 5th. Northern Iowa struggled defensively against the Redbirds and couldn’t fight all the way back after trailing by a 67-58 margin with 3:27 left in regulation. Northern Iowa allowed Illinois State to shoot 51.9% from the field and lost the turnover battle by a 14-11 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Panthers was AJ Green who had 19 points & 3 rebounds.
On the season, Northern Iowa is averaging 65.4 ppg on 39.6% shooting from the field. The Panthers are averaging 8.6 three-pointers per game on 32.7% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Northern Iowa has been led by AJ Green (15.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.2 apg), Wyatt Lohaus (9.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.0 spg), Trae Berhow (8.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg), and Isaiah Brown (7.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.8 apg).
Defensively, Northern Iowa is allowing their opponents to average 68.3 ppg on 44.2% shooting from the field. The Panthers have a rebound margin of 0.6 and are averaging just 4.6 steals per game.
The Bulldogs are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games following an ATS win and 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Panthers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. MVC opponents, however, are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games.
Drake has won 6 of their last 8 games and although their defense can struggle as they rank just 237th in scoring defense, the Bulldogs offense can be very explosive as they rank 49th in scoring offense, 36th in FG%, and 37th in three-pointers made per game. Northern Iowa has lost 5 of their last 7 games and although their slow-paced style of play has their defense ranked 104th in scoring defense, the Panthers can struggle putting points up on the board as they rank just 328th in scoring offense & 337th in FG%.
This is going to be a close game, however, I just can’t pass on taking the more talented team in the Drake Bulldogs as this game is currently just a pick-em. Northern Iowa is just 3-11 ATS this season and as I think the Bulldogs just have too much offense for the Panthers, I’m taking Drake to pick up this road win.
