The Chicago State Cougars and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish meet in non-conference college basketball action from Purcell Pavilion on Thursday night.
The Chicago State Cougars will look to rebound after being taken down in their season opener by a final score of 104-55 at the hands of Indiana in their last outing. Anthony Harris led the Cougars with 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting while Delshon Strickland and Travon Bell each had 11 points to round out the double-digit scoring for Chicago State in the loss, with Bell going 4 for 9 from the floor with 3 triples. Ken Odiase led the Cougars with 6 rebounds while Rob Shaw dished out a Cougar-high 6 assists in the losing effort. As a team, Chicago State is averaging 55 points per game on 31.7% shooting from the field, 23.8% from behind the 3-point line and 57.1% from the foul line after their opening game.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be looking to build on a strong start to the season, opening their schedule with an 84-67 win over UIC in their last outing. Nate Laszewki led the Irish with 12 points and 9 rebounds while Robby Carmody added 11 points in 14 minutes on the floor. John Mooney, D.J. Harvey and Dane Goodwin each had 10 points to round out the scoring in double figures for the Irish, while Temple Gibbs added 9 points and a team-high 3 assists and Juwan Durham matched his 6 points with a whopping 6 blocks in the winning effort. As a team, Notre Dame is averaging 84 points per game on 35.5% shooting from the field, 18.8% from behind the arc and 94.7% from the foul line after their opening contest.
Chicago State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a loss of 20 or more points while the over is 7-2-1 in their last 10 road games. Notre Dame is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a win and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 home games against a team with a losing road record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win.
I'm still not 100% sold on Notre Dame, as I feel like I still need to see more from the Irish before backing them on a consistent basis. The issue here is that the Cougars were absolutely manhandled by Indiana, and Notre Dame isn't too far off from the level of the Hoosiers, so since the Irish did a good job at making me eat my words against UIC, I'll side with Notre Dame to improve to 2-0 with a blowout win here.
