Ohio State Buckeyes -9,5 -- Over/Under: 141
The Illinois Fighting Illini and the Ohio State Buckeyes meet in Big Ten college basketball action from the Value City Arena on Thursday night.
The Illinois Fighting Illini will look to build on their current 3-game winning streak after a 99-94 overtime win over Rutgers in their last outing. Giorgi Bezhanishvili led the Illini with a game-high 35 points on 14 of 18 shooting with a team-high 7 rebounds while Trent Frazier added 17 points with 5 threes and Ayo Dosunmu added 12 points with a team-high 6 assists. Aaron Jordan added 10 points to finish off the scoring in double figures for the Fighting Illini in the win. Frazier leads Illinois in scoring with 14.7 points per game while Bezhanishvili leads Illinois in rebounding with 5 boards per game and Dosunmu leads the Illini in assists with 3.2 assists per game this season. As a team, Illinois is averaging 74.9 points per game on 43.5% shooting from the field, 34.5% from behind the 3-point line and 69.1% from the foul line this season.
The Ohio State Buckeyes will be looking to extend their own 3-game winning streak after a 55-52 win over Indiana last time out. Andre Wesson led the Buckeyes with 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting while Kaleb Wesson and C.J. Jackson each had 10 ponits with Wesson shooting 5 of 9 from the floor with 3 assists and a pair of blocks while Jackson added a pair of threes and a team-high 4 assists to finish off the group of double-digit scorers for Ohio State in the win. Musa Jallow also contributed a team-high 6 rebounds as well in the winning effort. Kaleb Wesson leads the Buckeyes with an average of 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while Jackson leads Ohio State in assists with 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Ohio State is averaging 72.4 points per game on 45.9% shooting from the field, 36.6% from behind the 3-point line and 72.4% from the foul line this season.
Illinois is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a win and 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Thursday games while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 games following a win. Ohio State is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 home games against a team with a losing road record. The underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and the road team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I can understand Ohio State being the favorite here, as the Illini are still hard to trust and can regress to being the worst team in the conference on any given night. However, this matchup has a history of close games, including 4 of the last 5 meetings being decided by 8 points or less. Home court hasn’t been that much of an advantage for Ohio State as the Buckeyes aren’t really covering games, but the road team has had the bulk of the success in this matchup anyways. I think the Illini will be up to the task after tasting consistent victories so I’ll take a shot with Illinois and the points in what should be another close affair.
