Ohio State Buckeyes -7.5 -- Over/Under: 131
The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes meet in Big Ten college basketball action from Value City Arena on Thursday night.
The Penn State Nittany Lions will look to build some steam after snapping an 8-game losing streak with a 59-52 win over Northwestern in their last outing. Lamar Stevens led the Nittany Lions with 18 points on 5 of 11 shooting with an 8 of 10 mark from the foul line along with team-highs of 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Rasir Bolton added 14 points with 6 rebounds as the only other Penn State player to score in double figures in the winning effort. Mike Watkins added 8 points with 6 rebounds and 3 blocks while Josh Reaves added 4 steals while being held to just 2 points. Stevens leads the Nittany Lions with an average of 18.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while Reaves leads Penn State in assists with 3.6 assists per game this season. As a team, Penn State is averaging 68.5 points per game on 40.9% shooting from the field, 31.9% from behind the 3-point line and 67.9% from the foul line this season.
The Ohio State Buckeyes will look to build some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games following a 76-62 win over Rutgers in their last outing. Kaleb Wesson led the Buckeyes with 27 points on 10 of 12 shooting with 3 threes and a team-high 5 assists while C.J. Jackson added 20 points on 8 of 14 shooting with 4 threes and a team-high 7 rebounds. Luther Muhammad added 4 threes of his own for his 12 points while Keyshawn Woods added 11 points with 3 assists to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Ohio State in the win. Wesson leads Ohio State with an average of 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while Jackson leads the Buckeyes in assists with 3.7 assists per game this season. As a team, Ohio State is averaging 73.2 points per game on 45.9% shooting from the field, 35.9% from behind the 3-point line and 72.5% from the foul line this season.
Penn State is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 conference games and 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 road games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games following a win. Ohio State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 conference games. Penn State is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
This game boils down to which of the two evils you feel is lesser, as you’re either taking points with Penn State and hoping that the Nittany Lions play another close one on the road, or you hope that Ohio State lives up to their potential and plays another solid 40 minutes like they did against Rutgers. I wouldn’t touch this game personally, but if forced to pick, the Nittany Lions have had lots of recent success in this matchup ATS and in their last 3 road games, Penn State has either won, or lost by 6 or less, so I’d take a stab with Penn State and the points here as I just don’t think that highly of Ohio State right now.
